ASUS EAH5870 Voltage Tweak, Kartu Grafis Tercepat?

Jakarta - Windows 7 sudah resmi diluncurkan oleh Microsoft, dan jajaran perangakat keras pendukung sistem operasi terbaru itupun sudah mulai beredar. Salah satunya adalah ASUS yang meluncurkan kartu grafis berbasis ATI Radeon HD5870 dan ATI Radeon 5850.

Sekilas kartu grafis ini memiliki penampilan seperti jajaran HD5870 lainnya, namun di balik besar tubuh yang dimilikinya, ASUS menyematkan sebuah teknologi yang dapat lebih meningkatkan kinerjanya, yakni Voltage Tweak.


Genjot Performa dengan Utility Tambahan

Tambahan embel-embel Voltage Tweak pada kartu grafis ini, menandakan bahwa ASUS menggunakan BIOS yang berbeda untuk GPU yang dimilikinya. Hal tersebut semata-mata agar pengguna dimudahkan dalam melakukan overclocking.

Dengan utility yang disediakan dalam paket penjualan, Smart Doctor, pengguna akan lebih mudah merubah clock GPU atau volatase yang dimilikinya dengan aman. Hal inilah yang membuat ASUS sedikit lebih unggul dari pemain lain di kartu grafis.

Di luar fitur dan utility Smart Doctor yang dimilikinya, ASUS EAH5870 tidak berbeda dengan kartu grafis sejenis dari pabrikan lain. Sebut saja kapasitas memory sebesar 1GB DDR5, Clock GPU 850MHz, kecepatan memory 1,2GHz (efektif 4,8GHz) dan pendingin ekstra besar yang hanya dapat digunakan dalam chasis full tower.

Meski berpendingin cukup besar, tingkat kebisingan yang dihasilkan produk ini tidaklah besar. Hal tersebut lantaran kipas ASUS EAH5870 hanya berputar sekitar 32%.

Pengujian yang detikINET lakukan melalui aplikasi FurMark menunjukkan, dalam kondisi beban maksimun, kartu grafis ini dapat mencapai suhu 72 derajat celsius. Suhu yang tergolong cukup aman dan sangat normal, mengingat HD5870 memiliki kecepatan cukup tinggi dengan 1600 stream processor di dalamnya.

Performa Luar Biasa, Namun Belum Optimal

ATI Radeon HD5870 dapat dikatakan memiliki spesifikasi yang tergolong sangat 'sangar'. Jika dibandingkan dengan generasi sebelumnya ATI Radeon HD4870, HD5870 yang dikenal dengan nama sandi Cypress ini memiliki 'tenaga' hampir 2 kali lipat. Jumlah stream processor yang dimilikinya mencapai 1600 unit --bandingkan dengan HD4870 yang hanya 800 unit.

Fitur DirectX 11 yang dimilikinya juga digadang-gadang dapat menggenjot jumlah Frame per Second (FPS) ketika memainkan game-game terkini. Namun, sayangnya, hingga kini belum ada game yang secara komersil sudah mendukung fitur tersebut.

Untuk menguji kemampuannya, detikINET menggunakan beberapa aplikasi benchmark serta video game dengan detail paling maksimal. Hasilnya memang cukup luar biasa untuk sebuah single GPU.

Misalnya, ketika memainkan FarCry 2 dengan level Ultra detail dengan resolusi 1920 X 1200, ditambah lagi Anti Aliasing diaktifkan hingga 8 X. Game yang sedemikian 'beratnya' sanggup dilahap mentah-mentah oleh kartu grafis ini. Hal serupa pun berlaku untuk 3D vantage ataupun aplikasi benchmark 3D Mark 2006. Sayangnya driver yang disediakan masih dirasakan belum sempurna, sehingga hasil yang didapat belumlah optimal.

ASUS EAH5870 Volatage Tweak, boleh jadi dinobatkan sebagai single GPU tercepat, namun sayang hingga kini belum ada game yang dapat memaksimalkan teknologi yang ditawarkan. Apalagi harga yang ditawarkan cukup menguras kocek pengguna, yakni berkisar USD 479.

Selain memberikan kelengkapan berupa CD penunjang, dan Crossfire Bridge, ASUS juga melenggkapi EAH5870 Volatage Tweak dengan game yang sangat dinanti kehadirannya, DiRT 2. Game itu dihadirkan dalam bentuk kupon untuk membeli game secara online.

Selain memiliki jajaran kartu grafis berbasis HD 5870, ASUS juga memiliki kartu grafis yang sedikit lebih murah namun cukup bertenega, ASUS EAH5850 Voltage Tweak.

Twitter Kini Hadir Dalam Bahasa Spanyol

Jakarta - Twitter hadir dalam bahasa Spanyol. Terima kasih untuk volunteer yang telah menerjemahkan situs 140 karakter ini.

Langkah ini sepertinya adalah tanda bahwa Twitter ingin lebih akrab lagi di negara luar. Atau bisa jadi, ia tak mau kalah dengan Facebook yang sudah tersedia dalam lebih dari 70 bahasa karena tangan-tangan komunitas penerjemahnya.

Tersedianya Twitter dalam bahasa Spanyol, tak lama setelah Twitter merilis proyek penerjemahan di mana pengguna dipersilakan menjadi volunteer untuk membantu Twitter membuat situs ini ada dalam berbagai bahasa.

Bagi yang berhasil menerjemahkannya, maka Twitter akan melabeli sang volunteer dengan ikon spesial 'Translator' di profilnya, seperti jika Anda melihat ikon Verified accounts di akun resmi milik sosok-sosok terkenal. Pengguna yang menginginkan akunnya ada dalam bahasa Spanyol, tinggal mengaturnya di Setting page.

Belum diketahui bahasa apa yang selanjutnya akan ditawarkan oleh Twitter setelah Spanyol dan Jepang yang tersedia lebih dulu. Namun kemungkinan mereka akan memilih bahasa yang banyak dipakai oleh usernya ataupun bahasa langka yang hanya diucapkan di satu daerah saja dengan tujuan membuat terobosan besar. (Choi)

Virus Merajalela Gara-Gara Windows Bajakan

Washington - Microsoft mengklaim ada hubungan erat antara pemakaian Windows bajakan dengan tingginya tingkat serangan program jahat semacam virus. Serangan marak gara-gara Windows bajakan tidakmemakai patch sekuriti.

Adalah Jeff Williams, Manajer di Microsoft Malware Protection Center yang mengklaim hal tersebut. Dia berargumen bahwa karena kemungkinan software bajakan tidak mendapat update keamanan dari Microsoft, maka software menjadi rentan disergap virus dan program jahat lainnya.

Dia menerangkan kalau tingkat pembajakan software di China misalnya, empat kali lipat lebih tinggi dibanding di Amerika Serikat. Dan ternyata, pemakaian Windows Update di China juga lebih rendah ketimbang di AS sehingga serangan malware rentan menghinggapi komputer di negeri Tirai Bambu tersebut.

Namun ada kejanggalan dalam klaim ini. Sebab jika benar banyak komputer di negara dengan tingkat pembajakan tinggi seperti China dihantam malware, seharusnya komputer di AS yang tingkat pembajakannya rendah relatif bebas dari program jahat. Namun kenyataannya tak demikian.

Tingkat serangan malware di negara China malah relatif rendah, yaitu 6,7 per seribu unit komputer.

Namun memang ada pula contoh negara yang cocok dengan argumen Williams, misalnya di Brazil dan Serbia Montenegro. Brazil yang juga pembajakan softwarenya tinggi ini memiliki tingkat infeksi malware 25,4 per seribu unit komputer, tiga kali lipat dari angka rata-rata global.

Sedangkan di Serbia Montenegro, tingkat infeksinya adalah yang tertinggi di dunia, yakni 97,2 unit per seribu komputer dilaporkan dihantam oleh malware. (Choi)

Dengan wujud yang menyerupai ponsel, TwitterPeek dilengkapi dengan keyboard full QWERTY dan layar berwarna berukuran 2,7x4 inch.

Perangkat ini dilepas ke pasaran dengan harga US$ 100 (atau hampir Rp 1 juta). Untuk model ini, harga tersebut sudah termasuk layanan wireless gratis selama 6 bulan, namun selebihnya konsumen harus membayar US$ 7,95 per bulannya. Sedangkan model yang satunya, dihargai US$ 200 dan konsumen akan mendapatkan wireless seumur hidup.

Namun jika Anda berniat membelinya, sepertinya beberapa titik lemah yang dimiliki alat ini patut dipertimbangkan. TwitterPeek ternyata tidak menyediakan web browser yang berarti pengguna tak bisa membuka link yang biasanya diikutsertakan dalam tweet.

Selain itu, alat ini juga melempem dalam hal pencarian (search). Jadi konsumen tidak bisa memakainya untuk melacak tweet tertentu yang memakai hashtags (#), begitu juga jika sebuah tweet tidak menyediakan @reply pada akun pemilik.

Ilmuwan Manfaatkan Google Earth Petakan Batas Sungai

LONDON - Para ilmuwan memanfaatkan layanan Google Earth untuk memetakan ribuan mil batas sungai yang terlupakan dari rekaman data internasional.

Hasil dari pemetaan itu kemudian dikumpulkan dalam sebuah database besar. Database ini nantinya bisa juga digunakan untuk membantu mengatasi sengketa batas internasional.

Dengan bantuan Google Earth, tim ilmuwan dari Durham University membuat sesuatu yang dinamakan International Boundaries Research Unit International River Boundaries Database (IRBD). Hasilnya, mereka telah menemukan sekira tujuh persen batas sungai-sungai di dunia yang hilang.

Meski informasinya belum terlalu banyak, namun saat ini IRBD menjadi kumpulan informasi paling komprehensif dalam memuat batasan dan definisi wilayah sungai di seluruh dunia.

"Pemetaan ini sangat membantu dalam menentukan batas sungai. Terutama jika batasan tersebut berpindah atau bergeser atau ketika muncul saluran baru," kata John Donaldson, dari Durham University.

Dalam membuat pemetaan sungai, tim pencipta IRBD menggunakan pemetaan skala besar untuk mengumpulkan informasi panjang batasan sungai yang penting.

Satelit pencitraan Google Earth menyediakan gambar yang lebih realitis bagaimana sungai muncul ke permukaan. Sehingga panjang batasan sungai yang sebenarnya dapat dikur dengan lebih akurat. (Choi)

Yahoo Kejar Google dengan Real Time Search

SAN FRANSISCO - Yahoo terus berupaya untuk mengalahkan Google dalam mesin pencarian. Kali ini Yahoo ingin menyaingi Google dalam sistem pencarian yang real-time.

Yahoo merasa lebih tertantang setelah Google mengumumkan menjalin kerja sama dengan Twitter untuk memberikan sistem pencarian yang lebih real-time. Oleh karena itu, Yahoo pun mencari partner yang bisa mengakomodasi pencarian real-time.

Salah satu perusahaan yang dilirik Yahoo adalah OneRiot. Perusahaan ini berlokasi di Boulder, Colorado. Kabarnya, OneRiot mampu mengumpulkan informasi internet dari berbagai sumber termasuk Twitter, Digg dan dari jaringannya sendiri. Saat ini One Riot sendiri telah memiliki 3 juta pengguna.

Pencarian internet secara real-time sendiri merupakan cara popular yang menggabungkan berbagai macam sumber untuk mendapatkan informasi di internet. Sebelumnya, Yahoo pun telah bekerja sama dengan Microsoft untuk menempatkan Bing dalam hasil pencariannya. Kerja sama ini akan berlangsung selama 10 tahun.

Namun Bing dan Yahoo dianggap kurang memberikan hasil pencarian yang real-time. Oleh karena itu Yahoo merasa membutuhkan sumber yang sama dengan Twitter untuk menghasilkan pencarian yang lebih signifikan. (Choi)

Automotif Kian Erat dengan TIK

PENINGKATAN integrasi TIK dengan industri automotif menjadi peluang bagi para pengembang software untuk mencari sumber pendapatan baru. Bahkan, Nokia juga semakin serius melayani pasar automotif.

Teknologi informasi dan komunikasi (TIK) merasuk semakin dalam ke industri automotif. Saat ini, TIK tidak hanya hadir di mobil dalam bentuk alat navigasi dan hiburan, bahkan sudah menjadi pengendali mobil dan bahkan petugas keamanan. Sebagai contoh, Toyota Motor Corp saat ini sudah menanam sistem G-Security ke dalam SUV (sport utility vehicle) kelas atas Land Cruiser yang dipasarkan di Jepang. Dengan sistem sekuriti tersebut, pemilik kendaraan bisa mencegah pencurian mobil, dan bahkan menangkap pencurinya.

G-Security bekerja mirip kisah fiksi ilmiah. Betapa tidak, ketika ada seseorang membobol pintu mobil, G-Security memberitahukan kepada pemilik, entah melalui SMS ataupun e-mail, bahwa pintu mobil telah dibobol. Pemilik mobil menerima pemberitahuan itu melalui smartphone. Selanjutnya, pemilik mobil menerima pemberitahuan lain bahwa mesin mobil telah dinyalakan. Di sini, pemilik bisa menekan tombol tertentu pada smartphone-nya untuk mengaktifkan kamera tersembunyi yang ada di dalam mobil.

Setelah kamera aktif, pemilik mobil bisa melihat wajah pencuri. Lebih dari itu, pemilik mobil juga bisa mengetahui ke mana saja mobil dibawa lari oleh pencuri, melalui sebuah tampilan peta digital. Puas bermain-main, tiba saatnya tindakan tegas dilakukan. Pemilik kemudian segera menelepon polisi. Koordinat lokasi mobil diberikan kepada polisi untuk melakukan pengejaran. Saat polisi sudah dekat, pemilik mobil bisa mematikan mesin mobil dari jarak jauh dan mengunci pencuri di dalam mobil. Ketika polisi tiba, penjahat itu pun dapat langsung diringkus.

"Ini memang seperti fiksi ilmiah. Tapi nyatanya, Toyota sudah menawarkannya di Jepang. Toyota pun menjadi produsen mobil Jepang pertama yang menyajikan solusi sekuriti dan konektivitas dalam kendaraan," papar Analyst Automotive Electronics iSuppli Corp Hitomi Larson.

Sistem G-Security menjadi bukti bahwa industri automotif semakin membutuhkan TIK. G-Security memang tidak bisa bekerja tanpa dukungan hardware, software, dan konektivitas data, yang seluruhnya adalah bagian dari industri TIK. Larson menambahkan, inovasi Toyota ini mendorong para produsen mobil lain untuk menyajikan solusi yang sama. Sebagai contoh, Nissan Motor Co Ltd saat ini sedang membangun sistem untuk menandingi G-Security dari Toyota. Produk Nissan itu diperkirakan siap menyerbu pasar pada 2010.

"Pada 2010 pun, sistem-sistem pesaing G-Security akan menjadi semakin banyak. Sistem-sistem itu pun tidak akan lagi hanya tersedia di Jepang, tetapi secara global. Kami memperkirakan, sistem seperti G-Security akan menyerbu pasar global paling lambat pada 2011," tutur Larson. Integrasi TIK dengan automotif memang sudah diperkirakan banyak praktisi teknologi informasi. Salah seorang di antara mereka adalah Chairman Microsoft Corp Bill Gates.

Dalam pidato di pameran industri elektronik konsumsi terbesar dunia Consumer Electronics Show (CES) pada Januari 2008, Gates menyatakan dunia akan segera memasuki dekade digital kedua. Gates menjelaskan, dalam dekade digital kedua, segala sesuatu akan terhubung dengan jaringan internet. Pengguna tidak akan perlu lagi kerepotan untuk memanfaatkan teknologi dan bahkan bisa mengakses data di mana saja berada setiap saat. Gates mengungkapkan, dekade digital pertama ditandai dengan kemunculan keyboard dan mouse komputer.

Adapun dekade digital kedua akan ditandai dengan user interface yang lebih alamiah, seperti layar sentuh dan kontrol berbasis gerakan. Dalam dekade digital kedua pun, sistem TIK akan masuk semakin dalam ke ruang keluarga dan kendaraan. Di sini Microsoft memang salah satu pionirnya. Sebagai contoh, Microsoft menanam teknologi Sync ke dalam 12 tipe mobil produksi Ford Motor Co sejak 2008. Dengan Sync, pengemudi bisa mengendalikan alat-alat elektronik dalam mobil menggunakan perintah suara.

Alhasil, tangan pengemudi bisa tetap berada di setir mobil dan konsentrasi pun tetap tertuju ke jalan.Teknologi ini sangat bermanfaat untuk mencegah kecelakaan lalu lintas. iSuppli menambahkan, integrasi TIK ke dalam kendaraan bermotor tercermin semakin nyata dalam pergelaran Frankfurt Motor Show 2009 di Jerman, September silam. Di sana, para produsen kendaraan bermotor, dan bahkan produsen ponsel, berlomba menampilkan aplikasi TIK untuk automotif. Sebagai contoh, produsen ponsel terbesar dunia Nokia Corp turut hadir dalam pameran automotif itu untuk menampilkan konsep navigasi, komunikasi, dan hiburan masa depan.

Salah satu produk Nokia yang dipamerkan adalah kabel yang mampu menghubungkan ponsel dengan head unit yang ada di dasbor mobil. Dengan kabel itu, fungsi-fungsi ponsel Nokia dapat diakses dengan head unit dan isi layar ponsel dapat pula ditampilkan di layar head unit. Pengguna pun dapat mengendalikan fungsi-fungsi ponsel dengan perintah suara untuk menjaga konsentrasi berkendara.

"Industri automotif telah memasuki babak baru dengan integrasi TIK. Ini adalah peluang besar bagi para pengembang software. Mereka harus berlomba membuat aplikasi untuk mendukung operasi TIK dalam kendaraan bermotor," ujar Analyst Automotive Electronics iSuppli Corp Kevin Hamlin.

Selain Toyota, iSuppli menilai produsen automotif yang paling agresif menanam instrumen TIK ke dalam mobil adalah Bayerische Motoren Werke (BMW) AG. Salah satu buktinya adalah sedan BMW 750i model tahun 2009. iSuppli menegaskan, BMW 750i adalah sedan yang sangat sarat instrumen TIK sehingga lebih mirip komputer yang diberi roda dan mesin, daripada mobil yang diberi komputer.

Untuk membuktikan kecanggihan teknologi BMW 750i, iSuppli pun membandingkan sedan tersebut dengan sedan-sedan lain yang sekelas, yaitu Cadillac CTS, Lincoln MKS, Lexus LS, dan Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Dalam pertarungan itu,BMW 750i mendapatkan skor tertinggi. BMW 750i mampu mengalahkan para pesaingnya karena BMW 750i memiliki instrumen TIK paling lengkap dan paling mudah digunakan.

"Platform navigasi dan konektivitas baru pada BMW 750i memudahkan pengendara mengakses informasi dan sistem kontrol," tandas Analyst Automotive Electronics iSuppli Corp Mark Boyadjis.

Boyadjis mengakui, para pesaing memang nyaris mampu mengejar kecanggihan teknologi BMW 750i.Namun,BMW 750i menjadi tidak terkejar karena BMW sanggup menanam sistem akses internet dalam kendaraan pertama di dunia pada sedan itu. Di antara seluruh instrumen TIK yang ada dalam BMW 750i, iSuppli menegaskan, instrumen yang paling mengesankan adalah sistem iDrive dalam sedan itu. iDrive merupakan sistem kontrol berbasis TIK untuk mengendalikan sebagian besar sistem sekunder dalam BMW 750i.

Sistem itu antara lain sistem komunikasi, navigasi,hingga prakiraan cuaca. iDrive bekerja dengan mengombinasikan panel LCD di dasbor dengan sebuah tombol kendali yang ditanam pada konsol tengah.
"Sistem iDrive sangat nyaman diakses pengemudi dan penumpang depan. Dilengkapi LCD 10,2 inci, sistem iDrive juga memiliki tampilan grafis yang sangat bagus," jelas Boyadjis. (Choi)

Microsoft-backed open source group outlines project guidelines

San Francisco - Likening its organizational plan to a museum featuring different galleries of interest, the Microsoft-backed CodePlex Foundation for open source projects this week is talking up its project submission guidelines, which were released last week.

Guidelines include allowing commercial sponsorship of project "galleries," with the foundation focused on being "commercial-friendly."

"We will operate much like [how] a museum has galleries," said Sam Ramji, president of the foundation board of directors. The foundation plans to begin accepting projects this month and has already had some project submissions.

Other guidelines include requiring that each project have a mentor and a strong project team. Projects must use an open source-friendly license. Project best practices will be maintained by the central foundation. New projects can be accepted even if they have overlapping functionality with another project. The foundation will provide mechanisms for code security,

"The core mechanism of the foundation is that we exist to provide a legal framework for open source projects much like other open source foundations," with an intent to make it easy for corporations to contribute to open source projects, Ramji said.

Formation of the foundation was announced in September. Microsoft provided $1 million in initial funding.

CodePlex differs from other open source foundations in that it is specifically dedicated to connecting corporate software developers with open source community projects, Ramji said. "No other foundation is dedicated specifically to increasing contributions from corporations to community projects," he said.

Although there are 350,000 open source rojects worldwide, the flow of contributions from corporations to open source projects actually is small, said Ramji.

Java, BlackBerry Desktop Get Security Bug Fixes

Sun Microsystems and Research In Motion have issued critical bug fixes for security issues with their products.

The patches were issued separately on Tuesday, with Sun releasing version 6 Update 17 of its Java Runtime Environment and BlackBerry updating its BlackBerry Desktop Software, used to sync data between the BlackBerry and a PC.

Both updates include fixes for critical security bugs that could be abused by attackers to run unauthorized software on a victim's computer, although none of the flaws appear to have been publicly known before Tuesday.

Sun patched 12 Java bugs in total, including flaws that could be exploited to crash a computer or allow untrusted applications to run as though they were trusted.

Sun estimates that there are about 800 million Java desktop users worldwide, so Sun's updates are important. Hackers have increasingly turned to third party software such as Java as Microsoft has made it harder to attack the core Windows operating system.

There is just one BlackBerry bug fix. The problem lies in a Lotus Notes DLL that is included by default in all BlackBerry Desktop 5.0 and earlier installations. RIM warned that the flaw could be used to run unauthorized software on a victim's PC.

As with the worst of the Java bugs, an attacker could take advantage of the BlackBerry bug by first tricking the victim to visit a specially crafted Web page. (Choi)

Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac arrives

Parallels announced Wednesday that Parallels Desktop 5 for Mac is now available. The latest release of the virtualization solution allows users to run Windows, Linux, and other operating systems on their Intel-based Macs. Parallels Desktop 5 works in both Leopard and Snow Leopard.

Version 5 ($80; upgrades, $50) includes more than 70 new features targeted at making the program faster, smarter, and more powerful.

In the “faster” category, Parallels Desktop 5 now includes full Aero support in Windows Vista and Windows 7, and an improved Parallels Transporter promises to speed up and ease the task of converting a standalone PC into a Parallels virtual machine. USB transfer speeds in Windows are faster than before, and Parallels Compressor runs in the background to optimize the size of the virtual machine for better performance.

“Smarter” features include a more Mac-like experience through a new Crystal view mode, which basically makes the Windows operating system disappear—Parallels’ icon vanishes from the Dock and application switcher, and it’s replaced with a Parallels icon in the menu bar. Click that icon to gain access to the Windows start menu, and a folder in the Dock provides access to Windows applications. There’s even an optional MacLook mode that attempts to make Windows’ windows look more like those in OS X—squared corners are rounded off, and the close/zoom buttons are replaced with the standard OS X colored versions.

Parallels Desktop also supports pinch and swipe gestures in many applications. You can, for instance, change the zoom level on a Word for Windows document by pinching in or out on your trackpad. You can also copy and paste formatted text and images between not just the Mac OS and Windows, but with Linux as well. Multiple monitor support has been improved as well, making it easier to use Windows and Linux applications on multi-monitor Macs.

Parallels Desktop’s virtual machine configuration interface has been streamlined, making it simpler to find the settings you wish to change. Both Windows and Linux guest operating systems can be installed via an easy installer, and Parallels supports up to eight virtual CPUs, and 64-bit versions of Windows and Mac OS X Server.

Some of the more "powerful” features are OpenGL 2.1 acceleration, not just in Windows but also in Linux. Parallels says that graphics performance in games and 3D applications is seven times better than the prior version of Parallels, and a revised interface gives users greater power over their virtual machines. Using a new floating virtual machine window, users can control the order of the machines in the list, apply custom colors, and see snapshots of activity on each virtual machine.

Users can now compress or expand the size of the virtual machine’s hard drive directly from within the program; no external application is required. The program also includes Smart Card reader support, for those businesses using this security technology. For those who wish to test drive Windows, Parallels will be making virtual appliances available that include trial versions of the various Windows operating systems.

Parallels Desktop 5 includes a bundle of Windows software, featuring a 12-month subscription to Parallels Internet Security by Kaspersky; Acronis Disk Director, a suite of disk management tools; and Acronis True Image, tools to help ease data backup and recovery. The program is currently available in five languages (English, German, French, Italian, Spanish) with versions in Chinese, Czech, Hungarian, Japanese, Polish, and Russian due out in the near future. Sony Ericsson's First Android Handset, Why Now?

Beleaguered Sony Ericsson must need good news more than sales, why else would it introduce its first Android phone months early? Just in time to hurt holiday sales of its current high-end handset!

The new Xperia X10 handset features an 8.1-megapixel camera, a 4 inch wide touch screen, and is built around Google's Android OS and Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor. Camera features include face and smile recognition, allowing the phone to associate photos with names in your contact list.

Introduced Tuesday, the X10, will not ship until after the first of the year, Sony Ericsson said.

Here's the rub: The X10 is being announced just as Sony Ericsson's current top-end model, the Satio, is going on-sale. That handset features a 12-megapixel camera.

Reuters sums it up nicely by quoting a Gartner analyst:

"I think some consumers will think about waiting until the first quarter to get their hands on the X10, rather than get a Satio for Christmas," said Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi.

"It was a difficult call to make trying not to negatively impact products like the Satio ... while at the same time announce something that will persuade consumers not to go to another brand," Milanesi said.

Sony Ericsson remains in deep trouble and is losing money. A recent management shake-up replaced a top Sony executive with an Ericsson exec as CEO after the two companies decided to reinvest in the brand rather than kill it.

The fourth largest handset maker, Sony Ericsson needs to show it has a future product roadmap that is both exciting and makes sense. The X10 will certainly excite many and shows the company in a much-improved light.

However, as Milanesi pointed out, the decision to introduce the X10 just ahead of holiday shopping season could convince potential buyers to hold off.

The conventional wisdom is losing any dollar is a bad thing, but how angry will people who get Satios for Christmas be when the X10 arrives just after the New Year? (Choi)

iPhone Under Attack from Android Invasion

There are only three days until Verizon joins the Android invasion. T-Mobile was first to embrace the open source Google operating system, but with the addition of Sprint, and now Verizon, Android is mounting a quiet revolution that could see it squash the iPhone OS and rise to a dominant position among mobile operating systems.

There has been a lot of media attention devoted to whether or not the Motorola Droid, available beginning this Friday from Verizon, is as good or better than the iPhone. Of course, Verizon started that debate by running the iDon't ad campaign that directly attacks the iPhone and compares it to the Droid. The fact though is that neither Verizon, nor Google need the Droid to "kill" the iPhone in order for it to be a check in the win column for them.

For Verizon all that matters is that the Droid is a success in its own right--regardless of the iPhone--and that it generates some excitement and brings in customers. I don't expect iPhone customers to defect en masse. They may not love AT&T, but they are a devoted bunch when it comes to the device itself.

In the meantime though, Android has quickly outnumbered and outflanked the iPhone operating system. It has gone from an obscure new-kid-on-the-block operating system to a preferred OS that is being used as the platform for a range of devices from the Droid, to Motorola's Cliq, to HTC's Hero (and the slightly modified HTC Droid Eris), and the Samsung Behold II.

The diverse hardware options are both a benefit and a challenge for Android. The fact that the operating system is license-free provides manufacturers with a cost incentive for designing handsets around the Android platform. Because Android is open source it is also easier for handset manufacturers and third-party developers to customize the platform and design applications that extend its capabilities.

The downside to the handset and wireless provider diversity is the diversity itself. As Google continues to develop and evolve the Android operating system it has to ensure that changes and modifications work across a range of devices and networks and don't break any existing functionality.

Apple's proprietary hardware and software, and the AT&T exclusivity offer similar pros and cons though. Apple only has to consider one hardware device and one wireless provider network (at least for now) when updating the iPhone operating system, but the success of the iPhone operating system relies on only one device that is available from only one wireless carrier.

The draconian control that Apple maintains over every aspect of the hardware and software contributes to its ability to produce quality hardware and a slick user experience, but it also limits availability and increases costs. The value of the quality and user experience is subjective and varies from user to user. Variety is the spice of life and the iPhone isn't for everyone.

The iPhone also has the benefit of having the most popular app store with the largest selection of apps. The Android Market is better than some other competing app stores, but Apple still has it outnumbered ten to one in app volume, and the Apple iTunes and app store platforms provide a compelling reason to consider the iPhone. Android will have to continue to develop and innovate the Android Market to provide similar value to Android users.

Ultimately, Android will have greater market share than iPhone. It is virtually inevitable. Even if neither the Droid, nor the Cliq, nor any other device end up beating the iPhone as a device, the sheer volume of Android-based handsets pretty much guarantees that Android will pass iPhone as an operating system. The Twitter-Only Gadget Destined for Extinction

Gee willikers, have you heard? They've just invented a new device that can let you use Twitter, even if you aren't at a computer! This could be the biggest thing in made-to-be-obsolete technology since the standalone Wi-Fi text messenger!

Okay, okay...I'll set my 50s-style faux-enthusiasm aside for a moment to explain. A company called Peek has just announced a new gizmo known as the TwitterPeek. The device lets you read and write tweets on the go, and -- well, that's actually it. You pay a hundred bucks for the thing, then another $8 a month on top of that for the standalone Twitter access. (You can also opt to buy a $200 model that includes service for the lifetime of the device.)

The company's selling point is that not everyone has a Web-enabled smartphone, and the TwitterPeek could be a more affordable way to keep connected with the Twitterverse. But is Twitter by itself reason enough to buy a $100 standalone device and pay a monthly access fee? Even if you don't want to cough up the extra $22 a month that could get you unlimited data on your $100 smartphone, there are still plenty of other more practical options.

But hey, maybe I'm missing the big picture here. Maybe we'll all soon be carrying around individual devices for every single service we need. Just think of the possibilities:

• The iRumor: Forget your other Internet-connected contraptions -- for the low price of $59.95 (plus $5.49 a month), this device will automatically check a dozen different Mac blogs to bring you the latest Apple-related rumors every hour!

• iRumor Plus: The expanded iRumor Plus doesn't stop with Apple. It pings TechCrunch at 30-minute intervals to collect every unsubstantiated tech rumor, Apple or otherwise, published on the Web.

• The FaceBook: Keep in touch anywhere with this book-like gadget that does nothing but show your Facebook news stream (and let you update your status with remarks about how cool your new FaceBook gadget is).

• The TwitTrend: An even more economical version of the TwitterPeek, the TwitTrend connects to Twitter but displays only trending topics such as #LoseMyNumber and #HesNotThatIntoYou.

• The Tap Tap Metallica Player: Why shell out the cash for an iPod Touch when you can buy Tap Tap Revenge: Metallica on its own dedicated device? (Note: Metallica may end up suing itself over this thing, so buy at your own risk.)
