Apple Singkirkan Aplikasi Kamus Kata-Kata 'Kotor'

(Choi)

Microsoft offers Office 2008 fix for Open XML documents

Microsoft on Thursday posted Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.1 update, an update to its office productivity software suite for the Macintosh. The new update is available for download from Microsoft's Web site. Office also features an auto update mechanism that did not recognize this update as available as Macworld posted this article.

The update corrects a problem that prevented Office 2008 from opening some Open XML documents. Office 2008 would, under certain circumstances, display an error indicating that it couldn’t open the file, and instructed the user to download a more recent update of Office for Mac.

Microsoft indicates that the problem affected Open XML Word, Excel, PowerPoint presentation and PowerPoint show files, along with templates and macro-enabled Open XML documents and templates.

System requirements call for Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later and Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.2.0. (Choi)

Twitter, Facebook and Google hit by cyber attacks

SAN FRANCISCO - Cyber attacks hammered Twitter, Facebook, and Google, disrupting the hip micro-blogging service and causing stumbles at the hot social-networking site while Google fended off assaults.

Twitter was down for more than an hour early in the morning on Thursday, before the eponymous California firm got it back online.

"The continuing denial of service attack is being mitigated, although there is still degraded service for some folks while we recover completely," Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said in an official company blog.

"Twitter has been working closely with other companies and services affected by what appears to be a single, massively coordinated attack. As to the motivation behind this event, we prefer not to speculate."

By late afternoon, Twitter said that service was improving but was still sporadic, with some people "unable to post or follow from the website."

Facebook was "degraded" by an early-morning distributed-denial-of-service (DDoS) attack on the Palo Alto, California-based Internet star's website, said spokeswoman Brandee Barker.

"No user data was at risk and we have restored full access to the site for most users," Barker said. "We're continuing to monitor the situation."

Twitter and Facebook have teamed with US Internet powerhouse Google to investigate the attacks.

Cyber attacks were launched on Google websites, but the firm deflected the assaults.

"Google systems prevented substantive impact to our services," said company spokesman Nate Tyler.

"We are aware that a handful of non-Google sites were impacted by a DOS attack this morning, and are in contact with some affected companies to help investigate this attack."

Hackers evidently employed classic DDoS attacks in which legions of zombie computers, machines infected with viruses, are commanded to simultaneously visit a website.

Such a massive onslaught of demand can overwhelm website computer servers, slowing service or knocking it offline.

"Ten years ago, we saw the first DDoS attacks take down some of the world's largest websites," said Cisco chief security researcher Patrick Peterson.

"The irony here is that botnets, infected criminally-controlled consumer PCs, are the problem. Many of today's tweetless are part of the attack if their PC has been infected due to poor security."

A DDoS attack hit Twitter about 6:00 am local time (1200 GMT) and caused the service to go offline temporarily.

Access to the website continued to be slow, with some aspiring users getting messages telling them that connections had "timed out" because Twitter computers were taking too long to respond.

The attack was the lead topic of conversation at Twitter, once users were able to reconnect.

Twitter user Benjamin Hobbs fired off a message saying he "wishes the denial-of-service idiots would get a life and leave Twitter alone."

Late in the evening, users were still posting comments in droves about the attack, using the tag #whentwitterwasdown, although many said they simply did not notice.

An everyday chatting tool for many, Twitter has also become a weapon for dissidents to circumvent censorship in places where freedom of speech is suppressed.

Independent information about deadly riots in China's remote northwest filtered out on Twitter, YouTube and other Internet forums in July, frustrating government efforts to control the news.

Similar to the phenomenon seen a month earlier during Iran's political turmoil, pictures, videos and updates from Urumqi poured onto social networking and image sharing websites like Twitter, YouTube and Flickr.

In many cases, items were reposted by other Internet users on sites outside China to preserve the content, while Twitter helped link people around the globe to images Chinese authorities did not want seen.

Cyber-sympathizers from around the world joined forces through Twitter in June to help Iranian protesters dodge censorship, get out news of violent clashes and avoid real-world capture following Iran's disputed election that returned hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to power.

Cyber attacks on Web pages of Iranian opposition figures have continued in the aftermath of the controversial presidential election. (Choi)

Microsoft Boosts Windows 7 Graphics With Hardware

Microsoft is trying to improve the visuals in Windows 7 by working with hardware makers on a software interface that maximizes the use of graphics cards.

The OS will support a new API (application programming interface) called DirectX 11 that enables better gaming through more realistic graphics and faster playback of multimedia files. The software giant is working with top graphics chip makers Nvidia and Advanced Micro Devices on those features.

The DirectX 11 graphics drivers are designed to help Windows 7 effectively break up tasks over multiple cores to boost application and graphics performance. For example, Windows 7 will process video faster by unloading the task from the CPU to graphics processor cores.

Nvidia has been able to use DirectX compute capabilities in Windows 7 to accelerate tasks like manipulating images or playing DVDs via its graphics processing unit, said Ned Finkle, vice president of strategic marketing at Nvidia, in a video posted on Microsoft's Windows 7 Web site.

"Microsoft did a number of things within the operating system that allow us to take the computing horsepower we developed for visual computing and apply it to a range of tasks that have never been seen before," Finkle said.

Beyond simple multimedia tasks, AMD said DirectX 11 harnesses the massive parallel processing capabilities of GPUs to improve gaming on PCs, said Neal Robison, director of independent software vendor relations at AMD.

"We're going to see gaming at a whole new level of realism that you've never been able to experience before because it just hasn't been possible," Robison said.

He also said that Windows 7 could speed up conversion of video for playback on portable devices. Users will be able to drag and drop video from PCs to portable devices, with DirectX 11 enabling video conversion on the fly.

While Microsoft has built native DirectX 11 support in Windows 7, users will benefit only with capable hardware. AMD in June showed off a prototype DirectX 11 graphics processing unit, but is yet to formally announce a product.

In a blog entry posted Thursday,

AMD's Robin Maffeo, a Microsoft alliance manager, wrote "there are plans to make native DirectX 11 hardware from AMD in its ATI Radeon GPUs available when Windows 7 is released."

Current graphics cards and integrated graphics on chipsets carry support for DirectX 10 or 10.1.

The ability to break up tasks is an evolutionary step for Microsoft in developing operating systems, said Dan Olds, principal analyst at Gabriel Consulting Group. As users demand heavier graphics from PCs, it is in Microsoft's best interests to offer an operating system that breaks up tasks across multiple graphics cores and CPUs, he said.

"In order to be able to get performance from succeeding generations, you have to have a multicore-aware operating system," Olds said. Execution of tasks on a single core isn't highly efficient, which was a problem that plagued earlier operating systems, Olds said.

The DirectX 11 enhancements could also encourage more developers to build games for Windows 7 and help the company keep pace with competition.

One company competing with Microsoft is Apple, which has changed the basic architecture of its upcoming Mac OS X 10.6 OS, code-named Snow Leopard, to include new features that divvy up graphics and other tasks over multiple CPU and graphics cores. It builds in support for OpenCL, a set of programming tools to develop and manage parallel task execution.

Nvidia and AMD have said they would support DirectX 11 and OpenCL. Intel, which offers integrated graphics on chipsets, in June released updated graphics drivers for Windows 7, but it carried support for only DirectX 10. (Choi)

Hackers attack Twitter, Facebook also slows down

NEW YORK - Hackers on Thursday shut down the fast-growing messaging service Twitter for hours, while Facebook experienced intermittent access problems.

Twitter said it suffered a denial-of-service attack, in which hackers command scores of computers toward a single site at the same time, preventing legitimate traffic from getting through.

The attacks may have been related to the ongoing political conflict between Russia and Georgia. They started with hackers using a botnet to send a flurry of spam e-mail messages that contained links to pages on Twitter, Facebook and other sites written by a single pro-Abkhazia activist, according to Bill Woodcock, research director of the San Francisco-based Packet Clearing House, a nonprofit that tracks Internet traffic.

Russia recognized as independent the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia after a brief war with Georgia a year ago.

When people clicked on the links, they were taken to the activist's legitimate Web pages, but the process of loading the pages at such volumes overwhelmed some servers and disrupted service, Woodcock said. He said it's hard to immediately tell whether it was a case of hackers trying to punish the sites for publishing views they disagree with, or if they were directing traffic to the sites out of sympathy for the activist's message.

"There's very little way of distinguishing which side was taking this action, because either side could hypothetically benefit from it," Woodcock said.

The fact that a relatively common attack could disable such a well-known Web site shows just how young and vulnerable Twitter still is, even as it quickly becomes a household name used by celebrities, large corporations, small businesses and even protesters in Iran.

"Clearly they need a stronger infrastructure to be able to fight this kind of attack," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at computer security firm Sophos. Twitter's tech support teams, he added, "must be frankly out of breath" trying to keep up with the site's enormous growth.

According to comScore, Twitter had 20.1 million unique visitors in the United States in June, some 34 times the 593,000 a year earlier.

For Twitter users, the outage meant no tweeting about lunch plans, the weather or the fact that Twitter is down.

"I had to Google search Twitter to find out what was going on, when normally my Twitter feed gives me all the breaking news I need," said Alison Koski, a New York public-relations manager. She added she felt "completely lost" without Twitter.

The Twitter outage began at about 9 a.m. EDT and lasted a few hours.

Facebook, whose users encountered intermittent problems Thursday morning, was also the subject of a denial-of-service attack, though it was not known whether the same hackers were involved. Unlike Twitter, Facebook never became completely inaccessible. Facebook said no user information was at risk.

LiveJournal, a 10-year-old online diary and blogging site that has waned in popularity in recent years, was also the subject of a denial-of-service attack that lasted about an hour Thursday morning, the company said.

By early afternoon both Twitter and Facebook seemed to be functioning, giving cubicle-bound social media addicts a collective sigh of relief. Twitter warned, though, that as it recovers, "users will experience some longer load times and slowness."

Technology business analyst Shelly Palmer told AP Radio that denial-of-service attacks are a reality of the information age.

"People tend to want to take sites that are very public and go after them," said Palmer, managing director of Advanced Media Ventures Group. "In fact you'd be surprised how many sites for major companies are really attacked on a daily basis. This is a crime, it's a real crime and it should be treated that way."

Earlier this week, Gawker Media, which owns the eponymous media commentary blog and other sites, was also attacked. In a blog post, Gawker said Tuesday it was attacked by "dastardly hackers," leading to server problems that caused network-wide outages Sunday and Monday. It was not immediately clear whether those attacks were related to Twitter's.

Thursday's was not the first — and likely not the last — outage for Twitter.

Besides planned maintenance outages, overcapacity can cripple Web sites, especially such fast-growing ones as Twitter and Facebook.

In fact, service outages on Twitter once were so common that management began posting a "Fail Whale" logo on the Web site to signal when the service was down. The logo featured a whale being hoisted above the water by a flock of birds.

Millions of Twitter users aren't familiar with the 3-year-old service's history of frequent outages because they began tweeting in the past six months, around the same time that the San Francisco-based company had was spending more money to increase its computing power and reduce the disruptions. With the added capacity, the Fail Whale rarely surfaces any more.

Even so, the entire site being down means Twitter hasn't put enough measures in place to prevent such an attack, Cluley said. That could include working with Internet service providers to filter potentially malicious requests from legitimate ones, as well as having servers spread out around the world.

Denial-of-service attacks are typically carried out by "botnets" — armies of infected computers formed by spreading a computer virus that orders compromised machines to phone home for further instructions. They are generally used to send out spam or steal passwords, though some can be commanded to overwhelm Web sites.

Successful attacks on popular Web sites were common earlier this decade. Sites such as eBay, Amazon.com and CNN were overwhelmed by such attacks, sometimes for days, in 2000.

But Thursday's attack underscores the fact that no one is immune.

"With these attacks, if you get enough infected machines ... you can take down anyone," said Dmitri Alperovitch, vice president of threat research at security vendor McAfee Inc.

Last month, dozens of U.S. and South Korean sites, including those of the White House and South Korea's presidential Blue House, were targeted in denial-of-service attacks.

For Lev Ekster, who runs a mobile cupcake truck called CupCakeStop in New York, Thursday's Twitter hiccup meant no tweets to customers and fans on the truck's location and the day's flavors.

But it wasn't the end of the world.

"As soon as I saw the Twitter outage, I went on to our Facebook fan page," said Ekster, who also uses Twitter to get reviews of his cupcakes, find employees and let people know about giveaways. (Choi)

Microsoft Mengaku Takut Linux

(Choi)

Pengguna Internet Malaysia Terancam Terkekang

(Choi)

(Choi)

Ancaman Cyber Makin Ganas, Antivirus Gratis Tak Cukup Lagi

Antivirus Gratisan Tak Cukup Lagi

(Choi)
