Google Unveils Chrome OS; Tech World Yawns

Earlier this week, Google gave the world a first look at the Chrome OS. The press event confirmed what was suspected when Google announced it was working on a netbook operating system four months ago -- it would emphasize speed and simplicity. As the tech world tests versions of the operating system that were compiled from Google's source code it is looking like the project's priorities may be weaknesses.

Chromium OS is simple; so simple that most hands-on impressions are calling it the Chrome browser with a few add-ons. The OS adds features such as a battery life indicator and window management, but lacks a few standards -- such as a way to shut down the OS.

A big advantage to Chrome is that the cloud-based model has the potential for extremely fast computing, including a boot time as short as three seconds. Right now, Chrome OS is getting mixed speed results, which is probably because it is running through virtual machines.

Vladislav Savov of Engadget reports his install booted to the login screen in fewer than ten seconds and was able to browse the Web in another five.

google chrome osSean Kalinich from Tweaktown had a far more underwhelming experience. His machine was booting about as fast as a laptop running Windows 7 off a SSD. Here's what he had to say:

"Boot up - From pressing the start (power) link until we hit the log in screen was 14.8 seconds. After typing in our log in information (which HAS to be a Gmail account), it took a further 4.4 seconds to get to the "Desktop", so total boot up time is about 20-25 . . . "

It seems that it is too early to tell if the Chrome OS will be a hit or a flop. To be fair, this is a very early version of the OS that wasn't ever meant to be much more than a browser. As Harry McCracken of Technologizer points out, Google said the OS is subject to quite a bit of change before an official release next year, and critiquing the OS is premature until a close-to-final build is available.

Google's Big Brother Fetish Continues

Google's mantra is "Don't be evil." Let's hope it the tech giant means it, because if Chrome OS succeeds in replacing Windows at the world's dominant operating system, Google's sway over the computing world could be exponentially higher than it is today.

Now, I'm not suggesting that Google's Web-centric OS is a nefarious, 1984-esque plot to subjugate the human race -- or at least the 1.7 billion (and rising rapidly) people who use the Internet. But Google already knows more about many of us than we may know. A few examples:

· Gmail: Google scans your not-so-private e-mail, and displays text ads based on keywords that appear in your messages.

· Street View: A feature of Google Maps that lets you explore city streets from a driver's or pedestrian's vantage point. Although Google blurs faces and license plates, Street View has raised privacy concerns in many countries, most recently in Switzerland. Some critics are concerned that car-mounted Street View cameras can peek into homes.

· Latitude: Google's GPS mapping service will track where you've been, and alert you when friends are nearby. One optional feature: Your location and photo will appear on the maps of other Latitude users.

· Docs: Google's browser-based productivity suite stores your files in The Cloud, which means on the company's servers. Docs users can save all of their documents online, including files that may contain banking, credit, and Social Security numbers, as well as other sensitive personal information.

· Social Search: An experimental tool from Google Labs that displays your friends' "public content," such as tweets and blog comments, at the bottom of your search results. Be careful what you write; your pals may be watching.

· Dashboard: Ostensibly a tool that addresses privacy concerns by showing how much Google knows about you, Dashboard raises a new set of security issues. If your Google account is hacked, for instance, Dashboard provides the attacker with a cornucopia of personal data about you.

Which brings us to Chrome OS. Designed initially for portable computers such as netbooks and tablet devices, the operating system will no doubt steer more users toward Google's growing stable of information services. This in turn will increase the company's already sizable influence over the online ecosystem.

Google thus far has shown itself to be mostly a benign giant, but the potential for abuse is there. The company has been willing to compromise its ethics -- such as by censoring search results in China -- in order to do business with governments that have little interest in free speech. And while Google's current management team may very well adhere to the "Don't be evil" code, there's no guarantee that future caretakers will be as responsible.

It's good to see a third competitor challenging Microsoft and Apple in the consumer OS market. But the Big Brother possibilities of a Google-dominated world remain a concern.

Hacked Climate Change E-mails Highlight Security Concerns.

In the heat of the climate change debate sparked by hacked e-mail messages, there has been little discussion of how the e-mails were leaked. In a connected world, security and privacy are both more important, and harder to come. The debate over climate change--and what is fact versus what fits the agenda of one side or the other--is raging in the wake of hacked e-mails alleging that facts were covered up. I'll let the climate change rivals battle that out, but let's take a closer look at the security aspects of e-mail and how attackers were able to acquire these messages.

A server at the Hadley Climate Research Center in the United Kingdom was breached and the attacker was able to acquire thousands of e-mail messages and sensitive documents which were subsequently uploaded to an FTP server in Russia and have since been publicly shared and analyzed around the world.

Officials have not commented on the authenticity of the data, although at least portions of it have been confirmed as legitimate. In a statement, officials did confirm the breach, though: "We are aware that information from a server in one area of the university has been made available on public Web sites."

Of course, this isn't the first time that potentially damaging information has been leaked due to an e-mail hack. You might recall Sarah Palin's personal Yahoo e-mail account getting hacked during the Presidential campaign last year.

Twitter has been victimized twice this year. First, in January some prominent Twitter accounts were compromised, leading to fake messages like the one allegedly from CNN anchor Rick Sanchez that said "i am high on crack right now might not be coming into work today." Then in May an attacker was able to compromise internal documents and employee salary information and post it to the Web.

These attacks are unfortunately not all that isolated or unique. In the case of the Palin hack, and at least one of the Twitter breaches, the weak link can be traced back to security controls on Web-based e-mail services. Attackers were able to exploit the system in place for users to recover lost usernames and passwords, and instead use it to gain unauthorized access.

The Hadley climate change breach, and the compromise of sensitive documents at Twitter, though, demonstrate why it is important to encrypt data--even data at rest on internal servers that are not intended to be exposed to the public Internet. Improved security controls to prevent unauthorized access in the first place would be nice as well, but encrypting the data trumps all else and virtually ensures it won't be compromised.

Ben Rothke, senior security consultant at BT Global Services notes that these types of attacks are simply a perfect storm, where hacktivists, broadband, poor security and cheap storage meet.

All of the breaches, hacks, compromises, and attacks highlight another point as well-if you write it, record it, photograph it, or in any way document or archive something, assume that it will be seen by the general public someday. With virtually endless amounts of digital storage, and social nature of online communications, its not possible to guarantee the data will never be disclosed.

I am not saying the ‘sky is falling' or declaring that security is dead. With strong passwords, solid security practices, and sufficient encryption, most data will never see the light of day. I am saying, though, that it is possible that the information could be disclosed despite your best efforts, and that you should think twice about what you write in an e-mail or post in a Facebook status update, lest it become a smoking gun skeleton in your closet.

Rothke says "The message is that every organization needs to take security seriously. But contentious organizations or those that store controversial data, be it a bank, embassy, developer of an operating system, or political organization, need to be extra diligent in securing their infrastructure."

Make sure you have security controls in place to prevent unauthorized access. Encrypt the data so that it can't be compromised even if the security controls fail. And, ultimately, don't write things in e-mails that you wouldn't want broadcast on the big screen in New York's Times Square.

Hope for the best, but plan for the worst. As Rothke puts it "Until they do that, the University of East Anglia will be just one of many such attacks. Get used to it."

Will Chrome OS Lead to More Powerful Win7 Netbooks.

Netbooks running Windows 7 could perform better, but Microsoft won't let them. With Chrome OS coming, Redmond may lose its ability to cripple low-cost portables. Chrome OS may lead to higher-performance netbooks, but many of them will not be running Google's next-generation operating system.

Why? Because Chrome OS could force Microsoft to stop crippling netbooks to avoid competition with more expensive notebooks.

Blame Microsoft for all those 10.1-inch screens, underpowered Atom processors, skimpy 1GB of memory, 160GB hard drives, and the not-very-good user experience on netbooks running Windows XP.

On newer netbooks, blame Redmond for Windows 7 Starter Edition. It will neither play a DVD nor join a domain. Starter Edition users also cannot customize their desktops, which lack the Aero look-and-feel. And the crippling 1GB memory limit remains.

Starter Edition has already been criticized as "too wimpy" for netbooks and a survey finds potential users do not want it on their new machines. Barely introduced, Starter Edition has already started to smell like Windows ME, which itself bears a stinch much like Windows Vista. See a pattern of much-hated operating systems here?

Microsoft has used its power to force netbook manufacturers to cripple their netbooks. This worked when Microsoft was the only game in town, but with Chrome OS due to arrive in about a year, Microsoft needs a new game plan.

Microsoft very much wants to keep netbooks from being used in corporate accounts. If it can force you and I to opt for a more expensive notebook or at least an $80 upgrade to Windows 7 Home Premium, that is a win for Redmond, too.

However, by next Thanksgiving, I will be able to choose a blazing fast--to hear Google describe it--netbook running Chrome OS. It will not be able to do everything Win7 does, but it will compare favorably with Starter Edition, and would seem to be friendlier for online media.

The reason this matters to both Microsoft and users is simple: Money.

Selling a netbook for $300 does not allow manufacturers to pay Microsoft as much for the operating system the sale of a $1,000 notebook does. Thus, Microsoft has an interest in limiting netbook performance so customers will instead buy more expensive notebooks.

Users, of course, want inexpensive, powerful computers. Netbooks are popular for just that reason, but could be more popular if they weren't intentionally held back, performance-wise.

By continuing to limit netbook performance, Microsoft will force Windows 7 netbooks, essentially, to take on Google Chrome OS from a self-imposed position of weakness.

Microsoft's should allow manufacturers to create the very best Windows 7 netbooks they can, ahead of Chrome OS' arrival.

If Redmond improves netbook performance, potential Chrome customers may realize that a fully functional operating system ultimately beats one that may be fast, but is also brain dead (as in unable to run the apps users want or need).

Microsoft's limit on netbook performance is bad news for customers. If the company fails to change, Microsoft deserves whatever punishment Chrome OS can deliver. I'm betting change is in the wind.

Does Second-Hand Smoke Really Void Apple's Warranty.

There are excellent reasons not to smoke cigarettes. And there are also stupid reasons, like Apple's claim that cigarette smoke can void its warranty. Really.

Now, I am as much against smoking as anyone. I also do not want workers needlessly exposed to hazardous substances. Still, for Apple to deny warranty claims on Macs exposed to cigarette smoke seems way over the line.

Yet, that is what The Consumerist says Apple has done on at least two occasions in recent months.

Apple is apparently telling at least some customers that the amount of cigarette smoke residue inside their computers makes it unsafe for the company to perform warranty service on them, despite the lack of such a clause in the company's warranty agreement.

The Consumerist says the complaint as been raised as far as Steve Jobs' office, with no relief for the customers involved.

The story was reported on Friday, though the Consumerist said it had sought, but failed to receive, any explanation from Apple HQ over a period of months. (The site is part of the Consumers Union/Consumer Reports organization, so I deem the report credible).

Now, if this were Dell, I would send Michael an e-mail and expect to hear back. At HP, I would send e-mail to my PR contacts, likewise at most other hardware companies. I would ask first, expect the company to say a mistake had been made, and get on with my life. You would not need to read about it. Mistakes happen.

Two things about the story amaze me.

First, that Apple--presuming they are not merely trying to avoid warranty claims, which seems far-fetched--would not send the customers a refurbished Mac as a replacement for the smokehouse Macs.

Heck, they could return the smoked-up machine along with a refurb and instructions on how to put the old hard drive into the "new" machine.

Second, my hazardous materials training has taught me that however dangerous smoke residue may be, there is a way to deal with it.

With its billions, Apple could buy a containment chamber where work could be done in a completely different atmosphere from where the technician stood.

Imagine one of those chambers that lab workers use, inserting their hands through holes in the box into permanently attached gloves. Only the gloves and a set of tools from inside the box touch the computer.

If something along this line is good enough for smallpox and Ebola, it will probably protect someone from a smoky Mac.

Alternately, a self-contained breathing apparatus, such as firefighters wear, would prevent inhalation of the cigarette residue.

I suspect many wearable air filters or respirators would do the same thing. That, plus gloves and protective gown, would seem to assure safety. (Ask an expert to be sure).

Apple could also open up the smoky computers and set them outside for a while to air out.

Further, if Apple sent someone who already smokes to do the work, it is hard to say how much worse they would be for the slight additional exposure. I'll bet a smoker would even volunteer for the assignment, if only as a means of helping fellow smokers get their computers fixed.

My hope is Apple will read the stories that have begun to appear and stop this nonsense immediately. I suspect the stories about these incidents will encourage some money-hungry lawyer to find the aggrieved customers and get to the bottom of this.

I would like to say I expect to write a follow-up in which Apple has a very good explanation that makes its actions seem reasonable. I would be happy to write a story in which Apple challenges the facts, or apologizes and promises to do better.

What I expect, however, is for Apple, the company that approved the "Baby Shaker" iPhone app, to remain silent and try to wait the whole thing out.

Maybe Apple will try to dodge this issue the way they tried to dodge overheating iPhones and Snow Leopard data loss.

Windows 8 Meluncur Tahun 2012.

Start Up Komputer Chrome Kurang Dari 7 Detik

CALIFORNIA - Google mengklaim peranti lunak terbaru mereka bisa membuat komputer melakukan start up secepat menyalakan televisi.

Symantec Temukan Serangan Baru Pada IE

Pesan itu menerjemahkan kalimat terkenal dari pidato John F. Kennedy yang berbunyi 'Ask not what your country can do for you; Ask what you can do for your country'.

iPhone 'Invasi' Tanah Air Samsung
