WASHINGTON - Wikipedia menjadi sumber referensi terbaru bagi warga Amerika Serikat untuk membeli obat untuk penyembuhan suatu penyakit. Berdasarkan survei yang dilakukan Pew Internet dan American Life Project, hampir 61 persen warga AS mencari informasi mengenai kondisi tubuh dan alternatif penyembuhan.

"Hal ini berpotensi membahayakan, karena sebuah situs dijadikan sebuah sumber untuk proses penyembuhan suatu penyakit."

Penggunaan Wikipedia sebagai bahan referensi pengobatan telah menjadi tren sejak beberapa tahun terakhir. Masyarakat lebih memilih untuk membuka Wikipedia untuk mencari informasi mengenai suatu penyakit ketimbang pergi ke dokter.

Banyak kalangan medis menyatakan keprihatinannya, dan mempertanyakan mengapa masyarakat tidak membuka situs-situs mengenai kesehatan dan justru membuka Wikipedia yang kebenarannya masih sulit untuk dipercaya dan masih dapat diedit sepenuhnya.

Dokter-dokter di AS menyarankan agar pengguna internet tidak begitu saja percaya dengan konten di Wikipedia untuk urusan kesehatan. Ada baiknya selain mencari informasi di Wikipedia, masyarakat juga berkonsultasi dengan dokter. (Choi)

Twitter Baru Lebih Kaya Fungsi

LONDON - Twitter, situs yang menjadi fenomena internet yang khas dengan pesan terbatas 140 karakter, menyegarkan pandangan para penggunanya dengan tampilan home page anyar.

Home page Twitter menghadirkan tampilan sign-up sederhana dan terdapat pula fasilitas mesin pencarian daftar 23 topik paling populer per menit, hari, dan pekan.

Pengamat internet mengatakan, perubahan ini merupakan pengenalan bahwa Twitter tidak lagi sekadar situs untuk mengetahui update kabar terbaru teman, namun telah menjelma menjadi sebuah situs yang menjadi tempat pemberitaan peristiwa global.

Pendapat ini mungkin ada benarnya. Pasalnya, penggambaran pembaruan Twitter juga ditunjukkan dari adanya perubahan deskripsi kalimat pada home page Twitter.

Pada halaman Twitter lama deskripsi kalimat berbunyi: "Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co-workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?".

Namun sekarang deskripsi kalimat itu telah diubah menjadi: "Share and discover what?s happening right now, anywhere in the world". Kalimat tersebut mencerminkan perluasan fungsi Twitter tak hanya sebagai situs pertemanan tetapi juga situs informasi peristiwa terkini.

Sejak meluncur pada 2006, Twitter telah menjadi salah satu situs populer di dunia dengan 55 juta pengunjung setiap bulannya.

Penggunaan Twitter kian meluas tak hanya dikalangan pengguna internet biasa tetapi juga merambah di kalangan selebritis, politisi, bahakan lembaga-lembaga kenegaraan dan sosial. (Choi)

Charger iPhone & Blackberry dengan Sinar Matahari

LONDON - Kini semakin banyak produsen elektronik yang menciptakan perangkat charger bertenaga matahari. Yang terbaru salah satunya adalah Powcell yang diciptakan oleh MotionTouch produsen elektronik asal Inggris.

Bagi pengguna ponsel yang lebih sering beraktivitas di luar ruangan, tentu akan merepotkan jika harus selalu mencari sumber listrik ketika ponsel kehabisan energi.

Techtree, Kamis (30/7/2009) melansir, mekanisme isi ulang baterai yang dilakukan PowCell sepenuhnya mengandalkan energi matahari yang berasal dari matahari.

Pengguna hanya perlu menyisipkan ponsel pada "holder" charger dan menunggu hingga baterai gadget siap diisi ulang.

PowCell menggunakan sel solar untuk menghasilkan energi listrik bagi kebutuhan gadget. Namun untuk saat ini, desain charger PowCell baru bisa digunakan untuk ponsel cerdas iPhone dan BlackBerry.

Hal menarik lainnya dari PowCell, charger ini hadir dilengkapi dengan baterai sendiri yang bisa diisi ulang secara mandiri pada saat tidak digunakan.

Microsoft-Yahoo deal to face tough antitrust probe

WASHINGTON - The Internet search partnership between Microsoft and Yahoo faces a tough antitrust review in the U.S. and overseas, with approval likely hinging on whether the marriage would foster more competition with market leader Google.

The deal, announced Wednesday, may have a better shot at success than the proposed pact last year between Yahoo Inc. and Google Inc. That agreement fell apart after the Justice Department threatened to block it, ultimately leading Yahoo to revive talks with Microsoft Corp.

Yahoo's alliance with Microsoft could have an easier path because antitrust regulators are tougher on deals involving the top two companies in an industry, said Evan Stewart, an antitrust lawyer at Zuckerman Spaeder. Google is by far the leading search engine, with two-thirds of the U.S. search market, according to comScore Inc.; Yahoo is well ahead of Microsoft for the next two spots.

Even so, a key lawmaker on antitrust issues said Wednesday that the agreement "warrants our careful scrutiny."

Sen. Herb Kohl, a Wisconsin Democrat, said lawmakers would review the deal "because of the potentially far-reaching consequences for consumers and advertisers and our concern about dampening the innovation we have come to expect from a competitive high-tech industry."

Meanwhile, the Obama administration's antitrust enforcers have promised to subject deals to more rigorous review than the previous administration.

"I'm expecting tough scrutiny in the U.S., and even tougher" in the European Union, said Herbert Hovenkamp, an antitrust law professor at the University of Iowa. He noted that European regulators have historically taken a harder line against Microsoft than their U.S. counterparts in their reviews of the software company's dominance in other products, like Windows and Internet Explorer.

A Justice Department spokeswoman, Gina Talamona, would say only that the department is "aware" of the deal. Peter Kaplan, a spokesman for the Federal Trade Commission, which also enforces antitrust law, declined to comment.

Under the agreement announced Wednesday, Yahoo will use Microsoft's search engine, Bing, on its Web portal, significantly expanding Bing's reach. In return, Yahoo will keep 88 percent of the revenue from search ads for the first half of the 10-year deal.

The deal isn't expected to close until early next year, and Yahoo and Microsoft said in a joint statement that they expect the agreement to be "closely reviewed by the industry and government regulators." They insist their partnership will lead to better choices for consumers and advertisers.

A key issue, according to Hovenkamp, will be whether regulators accept Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's argument that the deal will create a stronger competitor against Google.

"In the past, that defense hasn't worked all that well," Hovenkamp said, and courts have shot down deals between the second- and third-largest players in other industries.

But Stewart said the deal should pass muster because it will provide "real competition" to Google.

Separately, privacy advocates came out against the agreement.

The Center for Digital Democracy, an online privacy advocate in Washington that opposed the Google-Yahoo partnership last year, called for an examination of the partnership's consumer data collection policies, as well as privacy and online ad business practices.

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group also came out against the deal, as it had the Google-Yahoo partnership.

"The Microsoft-Yahoo deal should serve as a red flag," said Amina Fazlullah, media and telecom legislative counsel for the Washington, D.C.-based group. "When we lose independent search competitors, then we lose the ability to have multiple competitors working to preserve privacy." (Choi)

Cyber-criminals targeting social networks

VALENCIA, Spain (AFP) - Facebook, MySpace and other social networking sites are inceasingly being targeted by cyber-criminals drawn to the wealth of personal information supplied by users, experts warn.

Data posted on the sites -- name, date of birth, address, job details, email and phone numbers -- is a windfall for hackers, participants at Campus Party, one of the world's biggest gatherings of Internet enthusiasts, said.

A vicious virus Koobface -- "koob" being "book" in reverse -- has affected thousands Facebook and Twitter users since August 2008, said Asier Martinez, a security specialist at global IT solutions provider Panda Security.

"Its spread has been very significant and it has been detected in 4,000 different variants," he told AFP at the week-long event which wraps up Sunday in Valencia in eastern Spain.

The virus hijacks the accounts of social networking site users and sends messages steering friends to hostile sites coontaining malware, a malicious software often designed to infiltrate a computer system for illicit purposes.

In one of its variants, Koobface sends the victim a warning that its Flash player is outdated along with an invitation to download a new version, which is is in fact the virus.

Malware can be used to steal bank account data or credit card information once installed on a personal computer.

Facebook has sought to resist attacks by Koobface and similar viruses by blocking links to hostile sites and shutting down accounts from users that show signs of infection, such as sending too many messages.

"You also must be very careful with people who ask to join your friends list," said Laura Garcia, who writes a popular blog about Internet security, adding that hackers often sent requests.

Another danger of social networking sites are the popular quizzes, horoscopes and games made available for free to users which can sometimes be used to hide links to hostile sites, she added.

Birthday greetings and well as messages sent at Christmas and other holidays may also appear to come from friends when in fact they are linked directly to sites that try to convince would-be victims to reveal personal information like passwords or bank numbers, said Martinez.

The vulnerability of social networking sites was underscored in a study by security company Sophos made public earlier this month.

It found that about half of all companies un the United States block some or all access to them due to concerns about cyber incursions via the sites.

Facebook says that less than one percent of its users have been affected by a security issue, such as a virus, since the site opened in 2004.

Garcia said the number of viruses detected in recent years has exploded while the profile of cyber-criminals has changed.

"Before it was very savvy teenagers who wanted to show off their computer skills. Now you don't really need to know much about information technology to be a hacker, all the tools have already been created," she said.

Real cyber-crime mafias have now taken over, especially in Russia, China Brazil and the Ukraine whose goals are purely economic gain, she said, underscoring that hacking could be highly lucrative.

For an initial investment of 1,500 dollars (1,050 euros) for Mpack, a programme created to infect web pages, hackers can obtain a profit of between 21,000 and 847,000 dollars in just one month, Martinez said.

Around 6,000 people are expected to attend the Campus Party, which unites participants from all over the world to share ideas, experiences and all types of activities related to computers, communications and new technology.

The annual event began in Spain in 1997. Editions of the event have since been held in Brazil and Colombia. (Choi)

Twitter and Facebook make Afghan election debut

KABUL (AFP) - Afghans may be desperately poor, largely illiterate and without electricity, but that does not stop would-be presidents campaigning in cyber space on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube.

Mimicking tactics made famous by US President Barack Obama, one of the top contenders to rule Afghanistan "tweets" on hot micro-blogging service Twitter and has a flashy website where supporters can make donations.

Of 41 presidential candidates standing on August 20, some trumpet policies on social networking site Facebook, while video-sharing website YouTube carries clips of campaign rallies from across the war-scarred nation.

As only 10 percent of the estimated population of 26 to 30 million have access to electricity -- let alone a computer with Internet access -- it may seem like a waste of resources.

But Luke Cholerton-Bozier, who heads London-based digital media agency Red Narrative, says that even in a country where at best five percent of people have Internet access, that still means 1.5 million potential voters.

"The Internet has huge potential to affect elections in the developing world, as it does in richer countries," he told AFP by email.

"Those few people that do have computers or Internet access are going to be the types of people who are influential amongst their peers, and so it's important to gain their support for the election," he added.

His agency handles online strategy for Afghan presidential hopeful Ashraf Ghani, who blogs on Twitter and has his own YouTube page.

Another of the top three contenders, ex-foreign minister Abdullah Abdullah, has a sophisticated website with photo galleries and videos.

Incumbent President Hamid Karzai's online strategy lags behind his two main rivals, with his website "down for maintenance" just weeks before he stands for another term in the country's second presidential poll.

Karzai, who is tipped to win, does however dominate television coverage -- a priority in a country were 70 percent of people cannot read, his campaign spokesman Waheed Omer said.

"The Internet and Twitter and YouTube and Facebook and all these things, they have a limited audience here in Afghanistan," Omer said.

"I don't see how using Twitter or using Facebook for example could get anyone a substantial number of votes or a substantial edge in the voting... the Internet is a new thing in Afghanistan."

Indeed online support for candidates appears lacklustre.

A Facebook page for Karzai -- although unclear whether official -- logs only 528 supporters. Ghani clocks in 824 on his fan page. Abdullah wins the race with a still underwhelming 1,216 Facebook backers.

Ghani's Twitter page has 63 followers -- rather paltry compared to Obama's 1.8 million Twitter devotees.

Cholerton-Bozier says that a key aim of the online campaigns is to reach out to the better-off Afghan diaspora living all over the world, who can donate money to the candidates' campaigns.

And it is not just political candidates who harness the power of the Internet in Afghanistan.

The US military has a Twitter blog and Facebook page extolling its operation against the Taliban in Afghanistan, posting photographs of smiling soldiers entertaining Afghan children and talking to turbaned elders.

On the other side of the fence, the Taliban recently revamped its website before it was apparently taken offline this week. The site has been blocked several times, usually reappearing soon afterwards under a new domain name.

But in the cramped booths of a Kabul Internet cafe, patrons tapping away at their keyboards appear unaware or uninterested in the candidate websites, and few have even heard of Twitter and Facebook.

"No, I do not use those sites, mostly I'm just coming to check my email," said Arash Perzai, a 22-year-old medical technology student.

He said he did not even know the presidential candidates had websites: "I don't have any interest. Mostly I get my information from the TV."

Sherahmad Hotak, a 35-year-old construction company owner, says the Internet is catching on among his peers as it is more reliable than phone lines in a country where infrastructure is crippled by decades of war.

The International Telecommunications Union, a United Nations agency, puts Internet access as low as 1.5 percent in Afghanistan.

Hotak may use the Internet, but he is still in the dark about Facebook: "I have heard of it, but I don't use it. I don't know how it operates."

Microsoft-Yahoo Bersekutu Gempur Google

Jakarta - Microsoft akhirnya berhasil meluluhkan hati Yahoo untuk menyerahkan kendali atas mesin pencarinya dan bersama-sama menghimpun kekuatan untuk menggempur raksasa Google.

Tentu saja kesepakatan 10 tahun dengan Yahoo ini akan memberi suntikan tenaga baru bagi Microsoft untuk memuluskan ambisinya mengalahkan Google di pasar mesin pencari.

Segenggam asa pun digantungkan kedua perusahaan tersebut. Dengan Yahoo di sisinya, Microsoft berharap bisa lebih tenang menggenjot Bing, mesin pencari barunya untuk mengejar ketertinggalannya dari Google, yang menguasai sekitar 65 persen pangsa pasar di Amerika Serikat.

Sementara Microsoft berkonsentrasi pada perang situs pencarian, Yahoo diharapkan mampu membuyarkan konsentrasi Google dalam penjualan iklan di Web.

"Kesepakatan ini datang menawarkan sejuta nilai untuk Yahoo, user kami dan juga industri," ujar Carol Bartz, chief executive Yahoo.

Tentu saja yang tak kalah girang dengan kesepakatan ini adalah CEO Microsoft, Steve Ballmer. "Aku sangat bersemangat. Ini telah aku katakan sejak 18 bulan lalu. Konsumen, pengiklan dan publisher akan mendapat layanan yang lebih baik, dan tentunya akan ada kompetisi yang lebih menantang bagi Google jika Microsoft dan yahoo bersekutu di mesin pencari."

Regulator antimonopoli akan meninjau kesepakatan kedua perusahaan tersebut untuk memastikan bahwa kesepakatan ini tidak akan melukai kompetisi.

"Sementara Microsoft dan Yahoo menunggu persetujuan dari pemerintah tentang kesepakatan mereka, kemungkinan Google akan terus meningkatkan performa mesin pencarinya," ujar Danny Sullivan, editor SearchEngineLand.

Sepertinya pertarungan antar raksasa itu akan semakin panas. Apalagi saat ini Google tengah menyiapkan sistem operasi untuk PC, yang dapat mengancam eksistensi Windows Microsoft.

Sullivan mengklaim Google sangat paranoid dengan Microsoft. "Mereka selalu menebak-nebak 'monster' apa lagi yang sedang disiapkan Microsoft untuk masa depan," ujarnya. (Choi)

Intel Atom Baru Segera 'Meluncur' Tahun Ini

Jakarta - Intel dikabarkan meluncurkan Atom chip terbarunya, paling lambat akhir tahun ini. Hal ini sekaligus menepis rumor, bahwa peluncuran chip baru tersebut akan ditunda hingga 2010.

Dilaporkan bahwa Intel tengah menunda peluncuran platfrom Atom terbarunya yang bernama Pine Trail-M. Platfrom baru tersebut, mengintergrasikan grafis serta memory controller di dalam prosesor Atom.

"Pine Trail-M yang menggunakan chip Atom dengan arsitektur baru dijadwalkan dirilis bagi pengguna PC, paling lambat tahun ini," ujar Mooly Eden, General Manager Mobile Platforms Intel.

Eden tidak menunjuk secara spesifik kapan waktu peluncuran chip baru tersebut, tapi ia mengatakan Intel akan menunjukan beberapa prototye Pine trail-M netbook di forum pengembang Intel, September mendatang.

Nantinya Pine Trail akan meningkatakan performance serta kemampuan pada sebuah netbook. Berdasar data Intel, dengan memory controller terintegrasi akan membantu prosesor dan memory untuk berkomunikasi secara cepat, serta mengurangi latensi memory.

Sementara grafis yang terintegrasi akan menjalankan fungsi multimedia secara cepat dan membantu 'membebaskan' bandwidth pada prosesor, untuk menjalankan fungsi komunikasi pada komponen lain. (Choi)

Notebook Gateway Ingin Terkesan Eksklusif

JAKARTA - Sebagai pemain baru dalam industri netbook, Gateway justru tidak mau jor-joran dalam mengeluarkan produknya seri terbarunya di Indonesia. Ini tidak terlepas, dari keinginan Gateway yang ingin terkesan eksklusif.

"Kita baru masuk ke pasar Indonesia sejak Maret lalu. Dan sampai hari ini, kita baru mengeluarkan dua seri saja. Karena memang kita ingin menyasar langsung kepuasan konsumen."

"Bahkan penjualan Gateway tidak akan ditemukam secara sembarangan melainkan di beberapa toko tertentu saja," tambahnya.

Lebih lanjut, Helmy menambahkan, seperti 'saudaranya' Acer, Gateway akan menelurkan netbook yang khusus didesain untuk vendor, seperti Acer Ferari. Untuk itulah, dalam setahun pertamanya di Indonesia, Gateway hanya akan merilis beberapa seri saja. Akan tetapi, tidak sebanyak vendor lain.

Karena tergolong baru, Gateway pun tidak bisa memberikan target yang pasti dalam penjualannya.

"Yang jelas, dua seri netbook Gateway yang ada, yaitu LT20 dan LT10, masih akan kami terus genjot," ujar Helmy. (Choi)

Blackberry Gemini Cuma Rp1,5 juta

NEW YORK - Kehadiran Blackberry seri Curve 8520 yang ramai diberitakan beberapa bulan belakangan, mendekati kenyataan. Sebab, mitra distribusi Research in Motion (RIM), AT&T, dikabarkan akan segera melepas handset anyar tersebut.

Ponsel cerdas yang mempunyai nama lain Gemini tersebut rencananya akan dilepas AT&T pada 5 Agustus mendatang. Namun sayang, AT&T tidak menyebutkan negara mana saja yang akan menjual Gemini.

Soal harga, jajaran terbaru dari keluarga Curve itu, kabarnya akan dilepas dengan harga tidak kurang dari USD130 atau Rp1,5 juta. Tapi tentunya, dengan beberapa klausul kontrak yang harus dipenuhi oleh pelanggan. Dengan harga tersebut menjadikan Gemini sebagai Blackberry termurah di antara seri yang lain.

Kendati tergolong terjangkau, RIM sebagai perusahaan pembesutnya tidak ingin sembarangan membenamkan fitur yang ada di Blackberry Gemini. Pasalnya, handset ini mendukung GSM quad-band, dengan jaringan konektifitas EDGE, plus fitur wi-fi.

Ini belum termasuk dengan tambahan memori intenal sebesar 256 MB, untuk berjalan pada prosesor 512Mhz dan support Blackberry Enterprise Server. Aplikasi tambahan yang menjadi jagoan Blackberry seperti, Blackberry Messenger, Instant Messenger, dan Facebook. Tambahan lainnya adalah, kamera dengan 2 megapixel serta teknologi Bluetooth 2.0.

Track Ball merupakan sistem navigasi khas Blackberry. Entah apa tujuan RIM, yang jelas sistem navigasi ini tidak lagi dibenamkan di Gemini. Sebagai gantinya, RIM menyematkan sistem navigasi pola biasa, mirip dengan navigasi ponsel kebanyakan.

BEIJING - Setelah memblokir internet, kebencian China terhadap internet dilimpahkan ke game online. Kali ini game yang mengandung unsur kekerasan kena sasaran blokir.

Menteri kebudayaan China telah mengeluarkan kebijakan untuk menolak segala macam bentuk game berunsur kekerasan yang beredar di internet.

Game yang akan diblokir kebanyakan bertema dengan keluarga mafia dan gangster, yang sarat dengan tampilan darah, pisau dan senjata pembunuh lainnya. Bagi China, game seperti itu berpotensi menimbulkan perilaku anti-sosial dan dapat berdampak buruk bagi anak muda.

"Game seperti itu terlalu menyorot perilaku kekerasan yang identik dengan kehidupan gangster dan mafia. Pasti produsen game terlalu mengekspos perkelahian, pembunuhan, pemerkosaan dan darah," ujar pihak kementerian.

"Kami akan memperketat kontrol terhadap konten yang dianggap membahayakan budaya China," lanjutnya.

Akibat kebijakan tersebut, situs game populer di China milik Oak Pacific Interactive, seperti mop.com dan kaixin.com telah membersihkan situs mereka dari game yang dianggap tak bermoral itu. (Choi)

Microsoft Bebaskan Pengguna UE Memilih Browser

LONDON - Microsoft mau tak mau harus bertekuk lutut atas peraturan anti monopoli yang diterapkan Uni Eropa (UE). Sebagai dampaknya, Microsoft membebaskan konsumen Windows 7 untuk memilih browser yang mereka inginkan.

Desakan UE rupanya sangat ampuh untuk membuat Microsoft urung mendistribusikan Windows 7 satu paket dengan browser Internet Explorer (IE) besutannya.

Alhasil, khusus di Eropa, Microsoft memiliki tawaran spesial dengan membebaskan konsumen Windows 7 yang tidak ingin menggunakan browser IE, memilih browser lain.

Selain membatasi selera konsumen, Microsoft dituding melakukan praktik monopoli pasar browser dengan menyertakan IE dalam paket penjualan Windows 7.

"Konsumen Microsoft di Eropa yang membeli komputer dengan sistem operasi Windows dengan IE yang telah diseting sebagai default browsernya, akan diberikan pilihan pada "ballot screen". Jika mereka menginginkan menggunakan IE, mereka dapat dengan mudah menginstalnya. Sebaliknya jika tidak, mereka bisa memilih opsi lain," kata General Counsel Microsoft, Brad Smith.

UE mengkonfirmasikan bahwa pihaknya telah menerima proposal Microsoft mengenai adanya fitur "ballot screen" tersebut. Untuk memberikan kebebasan kepada konsumen untuk memilih browser.

Penyelenggara INAICTA 2009 Kok Sebar 'Spam'?

Jakarta - Sosialisasi melalui media online dinilai jauh lebih efektif untuk menjaring peserta ajang Indonesia ICT Award (INAICTA) 2009. Lewat situs berita, mailing list dan beragam forum komunitas, penyelenggara berhasil menjaring 700 peserta yang mendaftar secara online.

Ketua Panitia INAICTA 2009, Hari S. Sungkari, menyampaikan hal itu saat membuka ajang pencarian bakat kreativitas di bidang teknologi komunikasi informasi ini di Jakarta Convention Center.

"Media online saat ini lebih efektif dalam melakukan promosi dibandingkan dengan media cetak. Sebab, semua informasi bisa didapatkan lewat internet. Itu sebabnya kami memilih berpromosi secara online," ujarnya.

Untuk menyampaikan materi promosi INAICTA 2009, penyelenggara ajang ini melakukan kerjasama dengan beberapa situs dan portal berita online.

"Di samping memasang iklan di beberapa situs, kami juga melakukan promosi yang bisa dibilang kurang sopan, yakni spamming ke beberapa mailing list, email, dan forum komunitas yang ada di Indonesia," kata Hari.

"Tapi spam yang kita kirim isinya kan baik-baik, jadi mungkin tidak terlalu bermasalah," ujarnya setengah bercanda.

Meski bisa dianggap kurang sopan, menurut Hari cara itu berkontribusi terhadap jumlah peserta yang mendaftar. Sejak 20 Februari 200 lalu, peserta yang mendaftar bisa dibilang sangat lumayan.

"Kami telah menerima sebanyak 700 karya yang didaftarkan secara online. Sayangnya, hanya 312 karya yang bisa diperlombakan karena kebanyakan masih berupa prototype," paparnya.

Dari 312 karya yang dinilai oleh 85 juri, saat ini panitia INAICTA 2009 telah menghimpun sebanyak 70 nominator dari 14 kategori yang pemenangnya akan diumumkan Rabu malam (29/7/2009). (Choi)

Jonathan Zdziarski, si pakar sekuriti itu, memposting 2 tutorial di YouTube. Di salah satu video, ia menunjukkan bagaimana penyerang dapat menghilangkan passcode dan menggondol data penting di dalam iPhone.

"Para penegak hukum memang punya tool untuk melakukan hal ini, namun demikian juga para penjahat. Tentunya ini adalah masalah bagi keamanan privat kita."

Dalam video kedua, dia membeberkan bagaimana cracker dapat memakai software untuk 'memanggil kembali' berbagai data yang sesungguhnya sudah dihapus.

Padahal Chief Operating Officer Apple, Timothy Cook, menyatakan kalau peningkatan keamanan di iPhone 3GS membuat kalangan enterprise makin tertarik untuk mengadopsinya. Misalnya sistem enskripsi data.

Namun demikian, Zdziarski tetap ngotot kalau lubang keamanan iPhone 3GS yang didemonstrasikannya itu menandakan masih ada pekerjaan yang harus dilakukan Apple.

"Apple sungguh harus memperbaiki isu sekuriti tersebut agar benar-benar siap memasuki segmen enterprise," klaimnya. Sedangkan pihak Apple sendiri belum mengomentari temuan Zdziarski itu. (Choi)

Virus Komputer Bagaikan Cinta Terlarang

Jakarta - Tak semua jenis cinta boleh dilakukan, ada cinta tertentu yang justru terlarang. Termasuk cinta yang satu ini, 'folder cinta' yang menyebarkan virus pada komputer.

'Cinta' yang satu ini layak disebut terlarang karena akan menginfeksi komputer dan menimbulkan efek yang tidak disukai. Meski di sisi lain ia tetap membawa-bawa 'cinta' dalam penyebarannya.

Adanya penyebaran program jahat 'Folder Cinta' dikemukakan oleh analis antivirus Vaksincom, Adi Saputra. Disebutkan bahwa program jahat bernama teknis Autorun.QBP ini menggunakan trik yang tidak terlalu umum.

Virus dengan tema 'cinta' umumnya menampilkan pesan-pesan bernada romantis atau bahkan foto perempuan dalam penyebarannya. "Jika pada umumnya pembuat virus Cinta membuat virus dengan membuat pesan-pesan, baik dalam bentuk dokumen dan HTML, maka kali ini pembuat virus menebar hanya dengan menggunakan logo/icon virus yang berbentuk folder," sebut Adi.

Virus itu memiliki file dengan nama yang tersusun dari karakter acak. Ikon file virus itu mirip ikon folder dengan logo hati, sehingga dijuluki 'Folder Cinta'. Selain itu, program jahat ini meninggalkan jejak berupa file kosong bernama 'khql'.

Jenis pemrograman yang digunakan dalam membuat 'Folder Cinta' pun disinyalir tidak lazim. Jika umumnya virus menyebar dengan basis kode Visual Basic (VB) atau Bahasa C++, 'Folder Cinta' menggunakan script Autoit.

Ciri ciri dari file virus Autorun.QBP, di antaranya adalah:

* Menggunakan icon 'Folder Cinta'
* Memiliki ukuran 793 kb
* Type file 'Application'
* Ber-extension exe


Gejala komputer yang terkena virus ini adalah:

* Di setiap file sharing akan muncul file virus dengan nama '[namaacak].exe' dan file system yang kosong dengan nama 'khq'. File khq ini juga akan berada pada setiap root drive.
* File virus aktif di memori komputer dengan nama 'csrcs.exe' pada proses dengan username lokal. Anda dapat melihat dengan menggunakan task manager pada tab processes.
* Tidak dapat menampilkan file yang sudah di-hidden. Walaupun folder options sudah diubah berkali-kali, akan kembali hidden.

Core i9, Prosesor '12 Otak' dari Intel?

Jakarta - Intel konon bakal merilis prosesor terbaru bertajuk Core i5 sekitar bulan September 2009. Namun di luar itu, rumor untuk prosesor lainnya dari Intel sudah mulai berkembang.

Salah satunya adalah Gulftown yang dikabarkan akan muncul dengan nama Core i9. Prosesor ini secara fisik akan memiliki 6 otak (core), namun secara sistem akan dikenali memiliki 12 otak (logical core).

Ya, prosesor dengan 6 core ini memiliki dukungan Hyper-threading di masing-masing inti. Sehingga prosesor ini sanggup menangani 12 thread sekaligus.

Prosesor ini akan dapat digunakan pada mainboard berbasis Intel X58. Ini tak lain merupakan mainboard pasangan Core i7. Jika itu benar, Core i9 akan menjadi 'pilihan logis' bagi pengguna Core i7 yang ingin meng-upgrade jeroannya.

Belum ada pernyataan resmi dari Intel mengenai 'mainan' terbaru mereka tersebut. Namun, dari segelintir kabar yang beredar, prosesor Core i9 disebut-sebut akan dirilis pada awal tahun 2010.

Film Uighur Tayang, Hacker China Rusak Situs Australia

MELBOURNE - Hacker China kembali melancarkan serangannya. Kali ini yang menjadi sasaran adalah sebuah situs tentang festival film terbesar di Australia.

Para peretas sengaja melakukan aksi ilegal itu karena mereka tersinggung dengan pihak panitia penyelenggara festival. Pasalnya, dalam salah satu agenda akan menampilkan sebuah film dokumenter mengenai tokoh etnis Muslim Uighur, Rebiya Kadeer.

Situs itu telah diubah tampilan dan diganti dengan bendera China. Selain menyusup dan memasang bendera, hacker juga mengkritik keinginan festival itu dalam menyajikan film yang berjudul l The 10 Conditions of Love tersebut.

Sebelumnya, Konsulat China telah mengontak penyelenggaran Melbourne International Film Festival dan mendesak mereka membuang sebuah film yang bercerita tentang perempuan pengusaha Uighur, Rebiya Kadeer, yang diasingkan ke luar negeri, serta hubungannya dengan suaminya yang juga seorang aktivis, Sidik Rouzi, serta 11 anaknya. 3 anak Kadeer kini telah ditahan Pemerintah China. Selama ini Kadeer dikenal atas perjuangannya mendesak otonomi bagi Uighur yang dihuni 10 juta warga Muslim.

Pemerintah China belum lama ini menuduh Kadeer sebagai otak di balik kerusuhan etnis di Provinsi Xinjiang, antara etnis Muslim Uighur dan etnis mayoritas Han.

Akan tetapi, direktur festival Richard Moore menegaskan tidak akan menarik film yang rencananya akan tayang pada 8 Agustus mendatang. "Saya tidak akan tunduk pada keinginan penguasa China," jelas Moore.

Saat ini Moore telah menyerahkan kasus ini kepada kepolisian Australia. Pihak berwajib pun tengah menelusuri aksi yang diyakini dilakukan China tersebut, terlihat dari alamat internet yang teridentifikasi. (Choi)

Revenue Microsoft Semakin Anjlok?

NEW YORK - Harga saham Microsoft diprediksi semakin anjlok. Bahkan pada kuartal keempat tahun kinerja mereka yang berakhir Juni ini.

Microsoft menutup pasar dengan harga saham senilai USD23,45 atau turun sekira 8,26 persen dari harga saat pembukaan.

Microsoft juga mengumumkan, pada laporan kuartal ke empat mereka, net profit Microsoft turun sekira 29 persen menjadi USD3,05 miliar. Bahkan revenue Microsoft juga turun 17 persen menjadi USD13,1 miliar. Hal ini diperkirakan akibat melemahnya pasar komputer global.

"Munculnya banyak segmen produk yang digarap Microsoft, mulai dari enterprise, small business dan konsumer, membuat Microsoft harus terseret dalam kondisi pasar di berbagai segmen tersebut. Apalagi saat ini, segmen-segmen tersebut juga sedang mengalami penurunan. Khususnya di lingkungan PC dan server."

"Kami percaya, meski ada indikasi pasar PC dan server akan mulai stabil namun belum tentu hal ini akan berlangsung juga di tubuh Microsoft. Setidaknya sampai tahun 2010, setelah mereka menelurkan Windows7 pada 7 Oktober nanti," tambahnya. (Choi)

Sebuah kerja sama antara Microsoft dan Intel ini dimaksudakan untuk dapat membuat Windows 7 mampu meningkatkan multithread dan multicore chip Intel saat penggunaan aplikasi komputer. Produk yang dinamai SMT (simultaneou multi-threading) meringankan tugas berat komputer.

"Nantinya cara kerja seperti encoding video dan image filtering akan dipecah dalam beberapa jaringan. Semakin banyak core yang anda punya, maka akan semakin baik."

Selain itu juga, baik Intel maupun Microsoft tengah memaksimalkan kinerja driver dan BIOS level, sehingga mampu menjadikan notebook dapat melakukan booting dan shut down dengan cepat.

"Kartu chip Intel Nehalem mampu memenuhi keinginan kami, dan sinergi dengan Windows 7 memang untuk mendukung kinerja Intel Nehalem," tambah Alfs.

Seperti diketahui, Intel dan Microsoft sudah saling bekerja sama sejak 20 tahun lalu. Keduanya saling mengisi untuk mendominsai pasar PC. What Will Apple’s Big Tablet Cost?

If Apple doesn't introduce a tablet computer soon, we'll all be sorely disappointed. With all the ongoing speculation about the alleged iPod-on-steroids, I feel like the device is already here.

Today's scuttlebutt from Apple Insider has the Big Tablet arriving early next year, a prediction that matches one two months ago by Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

So what do we know about the tablet? Reports say it's an iPod-like device with a 10-inch screen, a handheld slate that's large enough for HD movies, video gaming, and Web browsing without all the window-resizing and screen-tapping calisthenics that smartphone users endure. Apple Insider says the tablet will feature 3G broadband, which seems logical. And since we're speculating here, I'd like to request Wi-fi, Bluetooth, and GPS as well.

Name Your Price

Specs aside, what should Apple charge for the Big Tablet? Some reports say $800 is likely, but that seems high for a consumer electronics device. My prediction: $499. Here's why:

According to a 2007 study by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), the average American household spends about $1200 annually on electronics products. Would the typical household blow two-thirds of its tech budget on one handheld device? Probably not.

And that CEA study was two years ago -- before the current recession and consumers' belt-tightening ways. To me, $500 seems like the sweet spot for a premium consumer gadget.

And then there's Apple's product lineup. Currently, there's a big gulf between the 32GB iPod touch ($399) and the $999 MacBook. Let's assume Apple drops the iPod touch price, as it did recently with some of its MacBooks. The Big Tablet would fill the void nicely at $499.

Of course, for Apple to achieve its desired profit margin, that $500 price tag may include a 3G service contract with a major wireless carrier. Given the enormous success of the iPhone, it wouldn't be surprising if AT&T, Sprint, or Verizon would be willing to subsidize the tablet's cost to sign up new subscribers. Netbooks with wireless-style plans are becoming increasing common, so the subsidized model for consumer hardware is already in place.

And, no, I didn't call the Big Tablet a netbook. Apple would hate that. (Choi)

Microsoft to let users pick browser

BRUSSELS - Microsoft Corp. will offer computer users a choice of rival Web browsers to ward off new European Union antitrust fines, EU regulators and Microsoft said Friday.

Microsoft said its proposal, if accepted by the European Commission, would "fully address" antitrust worries over its browser and "would mark a big step forward in addressing a decade of legal issues."

The EU has charged the company with monopoly abuse for tying the Internet Explorer browser to the Windows operating system installed on most of the world's desktop computers.

It welcomed Microsoft's suggestions and said it will evaluate the proposal and seek input from other browser makers and computer companies before making a decision. If approved, the proposal could be legally binding for five years.

On the browser case, Microsoft is suggesting that users of Windows XP, Vista or its latest release Windows 7 who have Internet Explorer set as the default browser would see a Web page prompting them to pick from five of the most popular browsers in Europe. Existing Windows users would get the ballot screen from a software update.

Microsoft said the list of browsers would be reviewed twice a year based on usage data for the previous six months. Microsoft's browser is the most widely used worldwide, but Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox is gaining in popularity.

Mozilla and Google Inc. — which recently released a browser, Chrome — are supporting the case against Microsoft.

Windows would still include Internet Explorer, but users would be able to disable it. Computer manufacturers could also choose to install other browsers, set them as default and disable Internet Explorer.

The company had said in June that it would remove its browser from Windows entirely to avoid antitrust problems. Instead, it planned to give Internet Explorer away as a download or on a disc. EU regulators slammed the idea, saying the 5 percent of people who buy Windows off the shelf wouldn't have a real choice of browsers. Most people buy the software pre-installed on a computer assembled by manufacturers such as Dell Inc. or Hewlett-Packard Co.

Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, said in a statement that until EU regulators rule on the company's proposal, it will continue to require PC makers to sell computers with the browserless Windows 7 "E" version in the region. Windows 7 will go on sale on Oct. 22.

The ballot screen that Microsoft is proposing is close to what regulators called for in January when they asked Microsoft to offer several browsers on Windows. Under that proposal, PC companies would have been responsible for building the browser-choosing technology. That could have conflicted with existing deals in which browser and Web search companies pay to have their products set as the default on new PCs.

Under Microsoft's plan, the software maker would handle the technology.

The original ballot-screen proposal was also backed by Norwegian mobile Internet browser maker Opera Software ASA, which triggered the EU antitrust case by complaining that Microsoft was unfairly using its power as the dominant supplier of operating system software to squeeze out rivals.

Opera lawyer Thomas Vinje welcomed Microsoft's announcement Friday but said "the devil is in the detail" on how far it would go to calm antitrust fears.

Offering the ballot screen to existing Windows users "will change the world," he said, because it would encourage developers to make cross-platform software based on Web standards instead of tailoring their work to Microsoft software.

Microsoft has said it fully complies with existing Web standards.

Microsoft to let users pick browser

BRUSSELS - Microsoft Corp. will offer computer users a choice of rival Web browsers to ward off new European Union antitrust fines, EU regulators and Microsoft said Friday.

Microsoft said its proposal, if accepted by the European Commission, would "fully address" antitrust worries over its browser and "would mark a big step forward in addressing a decade of legal issues."

The EU has charged the company with monopoly abuse for tying the Internet Explorer browser to the Windows operating system installed on most of the world's desktop computers.

It welcomed Microsoft's suggestions and said it will evaluate the proposal and seek input from other browser makers and computer companies before making a decision. If approved, the proposal could be legally binding for five years.

On the browser case, Microsoft is suggesting that users of Windows XP, Vista or its latest release Windows 7 who have Internet Explorer set as the default browser would see a Web page prompting them to pick from five of the most popular browsers in Europe. Existing Windows users would get the ballot screen from a software update.

Microsoft said the list of browsers would be reviewed twice a year based on usage data for the previous six months. Microsoft's browser is the most widely used worldwide, but Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox is gaining in popularity.

Mozilla and Google Inc. — which recently released a browser, Chrome — are supporting the case against Microsoft.

Windows would still include Internet Explorer, but users would be able to disable it. Computer manufacturers could also choose to install other browsers, set them as default and disable Internet Explorer.

The company had said in June that it would remove its browser from Windows entirely to avoid antitrust problems. Instead, it planned to give Internet Explorer away as a download or on a disc. EU regulators slammed the idea, saying the 5 percent of people who buy Windows off the shelf wouldn't have a real choice of browsers. Most people buy the software pre-installed on a computer assembled by manufacturers such as Dell Inc. or Hewlett-Packard Co.

Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, said in a statement that until EU regulators rule on the company's proposal, it will continue to require PC makers to sell computers with the browserless Windows 7 "E" version in the region. Windows 7 will go on sale on Oct. 22.

The ballot screen that Microsoft is proposing is close to what regulators called for in January when they asked Microsoft to offer several browsers on Windows. Under that proposal, PC companies would have been responsible for building the browser-choosing technology. That could have conflicted with existing deals in which browser and Web search companies pay to have their products set as the default on new PCs.

Under Microsoft's plan, the software maker would handle the technology.

The original ballot-screen proposal was also backed by Norwegian mobile Internet browser maker Opera Software ASA, which triggered the EU antitrust case by complaining that Microsoft was unfairly using its power as the dominant supplier of operating system software to squeeze out rivals.

Opera lawyer Thomas Vinje welcomed Microsoft's announcement Friday but said "the devil is in the detail" on how far it would go to calm antitrust fears.

Offering the ballot screen to existing Windows users "will change the world," he said, because it would encourage developers to make cross-platform software based on Web standards instead of tailoring their work to Microsoft software.

Microsoft has said it fully complies with existing Web standards.

Perusahaan China Dituduh Pencipta Trojan "Sexy Space"

WASHINGTON - Perusahaan keamanan F-Scure menuding tiga perusahaan yang berbasis di China, sebagai otak pelaku dalam pembuatan virus Trojan "Sexy Space".

Dikatakan F-Secure, virus ganas yang menyerang beberapa ponsel yang berjalan pada sistem operasi yang dikembangkan Symbian Foundation, pertama kali teridentifikasi terakhir kali pada awal bulan lalu. Dalam laporannya tersebut, F-Secure menuduh perusahaan XiaMen Jinlonghuatian Technology, ShenZhen ChenGuangWuXian Technology, dan XinZhongLi TianJin sebagai dibalik serangan malware ini.

"Virus Trojan itu menyerang melalui pesan singkat di ponsel Symbian, dan itu merupakan yang pertama kali teridentifikasi."

"Ponsel yang telah disusupi virus akan mengirim pesan ke semua nomor kontak dari ponsel Anda. Selain merusak ponsel, kerugian lainnya adalah Anda harus membayar sejumlah pulsa yang seharusnya tidak Anda keluarkan," tambahnya.

Memang virus ini tidak berkembang terlalu luas, hanya mengganas di beberapa ponsel saja termasuk diantaranya China dan Timur Tengah. Pihak Symbian Foundation tengah mencari solusi atas masalah ini, dan berjanji akan segera menyelesaikannya. (Choi)

Microsoft Violated GPL Before Linux Code Release

Code that Microsoft released Monday for the Linux kernel under the General Public License version 2 (GPLv2) was in violation of that license before Microsoft made it available, according to an open-source network engineer.

Stephen Hemminger, principal engineer with open-source network vendor Vyatta, in a blog post claims that a network driver in Microsoft's Hyper-V virtualization software used open-source components licensed under the GPL. Since the license does not allow for mixing of closed-source or proprietary code with open-source code, the software was in violation of the GPL, he said in the post, which details how the violation was discovered.

"This saga started when one of the users on the Vyatta forum inquired about supporting [the] Hyper-V network driver in the Vyatta kernel," Hemminger wrote. "A little googling found the necessary drivers, but on closer examination there was a problem. The driver had both open-source components which were under GPL, and statically linked to several binary parts. The GPL does not permit mixing of closed and open source parts, so this was an obvious violation of the license."

Hemminger said rather than "creating noise," he alerted Novell to the violation, which then informed Microsoft of the matter. He also congratulated Microsoft for releasing the code, which consists of four drivers that are part of a technology called Linux Device Driver for Virtualization.

"It took longer than expected, but finally Microsoft decided to do the right thing and release the drivers," he wrote.

Microsoft said through its public relations firm on Thursday that it is working on a response to Hemminger's claims. Novell did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Microsoft's announcement on Monday that it was releasing 20,000 lines of code under the GPL -- a license it has criticized and never used before -- came as a shock to the industry, and Microsoft used it as yet another example of its interest in working with the open-source community despite a past of thorny dealings with that community. The Linux kernel is licensed under the GPL.

The drivers Microsoft released, once added to the Linux kernel, will provide the hooks for any distribution of Linux to run on Windows Server 2008 and its Hyper-V hypervisor technology. Microsoft will provide ongoing maintenance of the code under the GPL, the company said Monday.

Many see open-source software as the biggest threat to Microsoft's software business. The company has made broad claims that Linux violates many of its patents, and it continues to seek royalties from open-source companies that use Linux-based software. (Choi)

Hacker Group L0pht Makes a Comeback, of Sorts

The news report begins with shots of a tense space shuttle launch. Engineers hunch over computer banks and techno music pounds in the background. There is a countdown, a lift-off, and then you see a young man in a black T-shirt and sunglasses, apparently reporting from space.

This is the Hacker News Network, and after a decade offline it is lifting off again, this time with a quirky brand of video reports about security.

Hacker News Network is one of the side projects of the Boston-based hacker collective known as L0pht Heavy Industries. They're the guys who famously told the U.S. Congress that they could take down the Internet in about 30 minutes, and who helped invent the way that security bugs are reported to computer companies.

The L0pht's eight members were hacker gods back in the '90s, but most of them have faded from the limelight, even as they've watched a cottage industry of security research firms sprout up based on many of the disclosure techniques they pioneered. The L0pht disbanded after it sold out to consultancy @stake in 2000, and its members gradually watched their dream of being paid to do cutting-edge hacking and security research wither and die.

But over the past few months, the L0pht has been getting back together, kind of.

Six of the eight members reunited last year at a Boston security conference, and in May 2009, members of the group released the first update to their L0phtCrack password audit tool since 2005. They say it took a few years of negotiations with Symantec -- which bought @stake in 2004 -- to get back control of L0phtCrack and several other L0pht properties.

Last month the L0pht Web site went back online, and the demo version of Hacker News Network is set for an official launch on Jan. 11, 2010. (Chosen because the date 01-11-10 works as a binary number.)

The L0pht Web site will give members a single place to link to their current projects. Peiter Zatko, aka Mudge, says he'd like to use it as an archive of the group's historic security advisories.

More projects may evolve. The group acquired the rights to its AntiSniff network monitoring tool from Symantec and is toying with the idea of reviving that as well.

"We're still trying to figure out what the ultimate goals are," said Joe Grand, aka Kingpin. "But I'm just happy that we can be in touch on a personal level and not have to deal with business, not have to deal with politics, and just have a place to do stuff."

Business and company politics pretty much killed the L0pht, according to some members. The core members sold their business to @stake in the hopes that with a deep-pocketed corporate sponsor, they would be free to do hacking projects that really interested them, such as drawing attention to important security problems that were being ignored by software vendors.

Mudge describes the L0pht's early security advisories as "very much a Rachel Carson-meets-Consumer Reports sort of attempt." (Carson was a biologist who advanced the environmentalist movement in the '60s.) Initially, the group tried to apply that neutral Consumer Reports model to its @stake work, refusing to take money or free products from vendors. "It drove the venture capitalists nuts because we'd be turning down the money," he said.

But in the end, corporate pressures trumped idealism. Within six months, Space Rogue, the only member who remains anonymous, was fired from his job in the company's PR department ("I didn't fit in at all; they were a bunch of clueless idiots," Space Rogue remembers), and gradually other members drifted away, often in disillusionment.

"We went there to become researchers," said Christien Rioux, aka DilDog. "Unfortunately the research part didn't generate enough money to fund the consulting part."

"It stopped being fun," said Joe Grand, who said he left after being pressured to do consulting work instead of the research he loved. Today Grand runs his own electronics design company, Grand Idea Studio.

Some members stopped talking to each other, angry with the way things had gone. The only L0phter with Symantec today is Paul Nash (aka Silicosis).

But bad feelings between the members have softened with time. Though many of them live in different cities now, they still get together whenever they can, at conferences or when they happen to be passing through the same city.

"I don't think we could ever recapture the magic of what the L0pht was," said Space Rogue, who is now an IT staffer in Massachusetts. "But I think we're at the point now where we can rekindle the friendship."

Microsoft sales drop sharply, sees no quick recovery

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Microsoft Corp (MSFT.O) posted the first-ever drop in annual sales of Windows and its quarterly revenue fell a steeper-than-expected 17 percent as its business continued to be hurt by the weak global PC and server markets.

The news sent Microsoft shares down 8 percent and took the shine off a big U.S. stock market rally earlier in the day that had driven the Dow Jones industrial average (.DJI) above 9,000 points.

The world's largest software maker, whose operating systems power the vast majority of the world's personal computers, offered little hope for a turnaround in technology until next year, despite recent optimism from rival International Business Machines Corp (IBM.N) and chip maker Intel Corp (INTC.O).

"We still see conditions being challenging for the balance of this calendar year," Chief Financial Officer Christopher Liddell said in a telephone interview.

"At least sequentially, we are seeing a little bit of growth. While things are not necessarily getting better, they may have bottomed out," said Liddell.

LIGHT ON REVENUE

Microsoft reported fiscal fourth quarter net profit of $3.045 billion, or 34 cents per share, compared with $4.297 billion, or 46 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Profit excluding items was 36 cents per share for the quarter ended June 30, meeting analysts' average forecast, according to Reuters Estimates.

Sales fell 17 percent to $13.1 billion, missing analysts' average estimate of $14.48 billion. Annual sales of the company's Windows operating system -- its first and most important business -- fell for the first time on record.

"They were really light on revenue. They need to explain where the money went. If I was Nancy Drew this would be the case of the missing revenue," said Kim Caughey, senior analyst at Fort Pitt Capital Group, referring to the fictional detective.

Wall Street highlighted the lack of big tech projects.

"Spending has been sparse by businesses and we're not in full recovery mode yet," said Laxmi Poruri, partner at Primary Global Research. "We're not in big-ticket mode, which is businesses purchasing a lot of equipment and a lot of software. They're doing small projects and that's going to hurt your margins.

SLASHING COSTS

Microsoft is preparing to bring out the latest version of its operating system, Windows 7, on October 22. Liddell said that release would not, on its own, spark a recovery in PC sales.

With sales under pressure, the Redmond, Washington-based company is focusing on controlling costs, announcing 5,000 job cuts in January.

For fiscal year 2010, which started July 1, the company is targeting $26.6 billion to $26.9 billion in operating expenses, slightly cutting the lower end of its estimate from three months ago. Comparable expenses in the fiscal year just ended were $25.4 billion.

Microsoft's shares fell 8 percent to $23.44 in extended trading, after closing up 3 percent at $25.56 on Nasdaq, contributing to losses on stock futures across the board.

At Thursday's close, the stock had risen 70 percent since early March, on hopes that Windows 7 system will be a hit and a positive reaction to its new Bing search engine. (Choi)

Google Latitude for iPhone arrives — as Web app

Google released Latitude earlier this year as a location-based service (LBS) that competes with Brightkite and Loopt. After bringing Latitude to Android phones last month, it is now available as an iPhone web app—because Apple didn't want it as a native app.

Like similar LBS's, Latitude allows you to add friends, view their location on a map, and send messages to schedule lunch or a meeting. You get complete control over privacy settings such as who can see your location and how exactly it is plotted on their map. Interestingly, Google Mobile Product Manager Mat Balez notes on Google's Official Mobile Blog that "We worked closely with Apple to bring Latitude to the iPhone in a way Apple thought would be best for iPhone users." Whereby "worked closely with Apple," Balez means that Google originally developed Latitude for iPhone as a native app, and Apple shot it down. "Apple requested we release Latitude as a web application in order to avoid confusion with Maps on the iPhone, which uses Google to serve maps tiles."

Thanks to Safari's newfound access to the iPhone's GPS hardware in OS 3.0, Latitude works pretty well as a web app in our quick testing. But Apple's request of Google to rewrite Latitude as a web app must have been no small feat. This probably explains why Latitude arrived for just Android last month, instead of simultaneously for the iPhone, as has been Google's typical behavior so far.

Balez's blog post also points out that because the iPhone doesn't allow third-party applications (or web apps) to run in the background, "we're not able to provide continuous background location updates in the same way that we can for Latitude users on Android, Blackberry, Symbian and Window[s] Mobile." In other words, in addition to there being no native app, there's also not nearly the amount of functionality as on those four other platforms. (Choi)

Several Chinese Android Phones Due in Europe This Year

At least three Chinese companies have put Google's Android operating system on mobile phones they say will launch in Europe this year.

Beyond Radio Technology, an unknown Chinese handset designer, is the latest to announce such plans. The company's Android phone will go on sale in Europe this year, and later in China and Taiwan, a company engineer surnamed Liu said by phone Friday.

The company has four partners that will brand and sell the Android phone, Liu said, declining to give their names. The partner launching the phone in Europe is a global brand, he said.

Chinese companies Huawei Technologies and Haier have also revealed plans to sell Android handsets in Europe. Huawei has said T-Mobile will launch its Android phone there during the third quarter. It first announced the 3G handset, which resembles the iPhone, early this year.

Haier, best known in China for its air conditioners and refrigerators, will release an Android handset in France around September, a marketing employee at the company said in an e-mail. A mock-up of the 3.2-inch screen phone was on display at a Singapore trade show last month.

The phone from Beyond Radio Technology has a 2.8-inch touchscreen and supports Wi-Fi, but not 3G or EDGE. A future version will support 3G, Liu said.

The phone's designer, based in the southern Chinese manufacturing base of Shenzhen, posted pictures of the phone on its Web site this week.

"We think Android is the future direction for mobile phones," Liu said, citing Android's open-source code and low cost as its strengths. (Choi)

Jakarta - Aksi pengeboman yang baru saja terjadi di Hotel JW Marriot dan Ritz-Carlton menimbulkan kegerahan di kalangan umat Islam Indonesia. Gerakan menentang aksi terorisme pun diteriakkan di Facebook.

Gerakan bertajuk 'Umat Islam Indonesia Menentang Aksi Terorisme' tersebut mengajak segenap kaum muslimin-muslimat Indonesia untuk menyatakan perlawanan terhadap segala bentuk terorisme yang mengatasnamakan Islam.

"Tindakan brutal, menyebarkan ketakutan dan kebencian terhadap manusia, telah nyata-nyata merugikan umat Islam sendiri. Perbuatan terorisme adalah bertentangan dengan syariat Islam. Mari kita wujudkan Islam adalah agama perdamaian, Islam menentang segala bentuk aksi terorisme," demikian pesan yang tertulis di akun Facebook kelompok tersebut.

Pukul 09.20 wib, jumlah anggota dari kelompok ini memang masih terbilang sedikit, yakni 57 orang. Mungkin karena baru dibuat.

Selain itu, dalam postingan tersebut terdapat kutipan ayat-ayat suci Al-Quran yang ingin menunjukkan bahwa Tuhan tidak menghendaki permusuhan antar manusia, dan menginginkan manusia berbuat kebaikan, tidak membunuh sesamanya. (Choi)

Hadang FB, MySpace Jadi Platform Video Game

Jakarta - MySpace terus berjuang untuk meruntuhkan dominasi Facebook, sebagai situs jejaring sosial yang sukses merebut hati banyak orang saat ini. Salah satu cara yang ditempuh adalah dengan menjadi platform video game online.

Hal ini diungkapkan oleh Jonathan Miller, News Corp digital head, selaku induk dari MySpace. Ia melihat ada kesempatan untuk menjadikan MySpace sebagai platform game yang sesuai untuk para pengembang game, yang akan meluncurkan atau mengembangkan produknya.

"MySpace akan menjadi platform game masa depan, menyediakan ruang bagi orang untuk bertemu dan bermain game."

Sementara itu, kalangan analis meragukan kemampuan MySpace untuk menghadirkan hiburan, mengingat bahwa untuk urusan video saja, MySpace kalah dengan Youtube dan Hulu.

Namun, bermain di platform video game mungkin bisa menjadi senjata baru bagi MySpace untuk tetap eksis sekaligus memberikan perlawanan yang lebih baik terhadap Facebook.

Saat ini memang Facebook memang sedang di atas angin. Menurut data dari comScore, situs jejaring sosial besutan Mark Zuckerberg ini terus melaju dengan jumlah pengunjung lebih dari 307 juta, sementara MySpace tertinggal di belakang dengan jumlah pengunjung 125 juta. (Choi)
