Microsoft offers open source link for PHP,

San Francisco - Microsoft's Developer and Platform Evangelism Interoperability team is introducing on Friday an open source project to bridge PHP and Microsoft's .Net programming model, Microsoft representatives said.

The company's PHP Toolkit for ADO.Net Data Services uses REST as a bridge between Microsoft's software platform and the popular PHP scripting language, said Peter Galli, Microsoft open source community manager, in a blog entry. With the kit, developed by Persistent Systems, PHP developers can more easily take advantage of ADO.Net Data Services, which are a set of features in the .Net Framework for building and consuming data services from the Web. The services previously were referred to as Project Astoria.

[ Earlier this week, another Microsoft executive detailed plans for dynamic scripting languages accommodations in Visual Studio 2010. ]

The services "expose a wide range of data sources through a RESTful service interface," Galli said. Full support for ADO.NET Data Services is offered in Visual Studio 2008 SP1 and the upcoming Visual Studio 2010 platform.

At design time, the PHP toolkit generates proxy classes based on metadata exposed by ADO.Net Data Services. Developers can call from their code these classes at runtime, for programming against ADO.Net Data Services using local PHP classes.

"Using RESTful services over HTTP, the communication between the PHP application and ADO.Net Data Services is taken care of by the PHP proxy classes and the toolkit libraries, but of course you can look at (or edit) this code," said Claudio Caldato, Senior Program Manager for Microsoft's Interoperability Technical Strategy team, also in a blog.

Funded by Microsoft, the PHP toolkit is available the Microsoft CodePlex site for open source projects. Microsoft also has partnered with PHP tools vendor Zend Technologies to accommodate PHP within the Windows platform. (Choi)

Microsoft, Yahoo, Amazon to fight Google book deal

SAN FRANCISCO - The fight against a legal settlement that would give Google Inc. the digital rights to millions of copyrighted books is starting to resemble a heavyweight brawl in the library.

Microsoft Corp., Yahoo Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. are joining a coalition that hopes to rally opposition to Google's digital book ambitions and ultimately persuade a federal judge to block or revise the Internet search leader's plans.

The group, to be called the Open Book Alliance, is being put together by the Internet Archive, a longtime critic of Google's crusade to make digital copies of as many printed books as possible. A growing number of critics already have filed objections to Google's book settlement, but none have the clout that the Open Book Alliance figures to wield with three of the world's best-known technology companies on board.

Peter Brantley, the Internet Archive's director of access, provided some of the details about the alliance's members and objectives in a Thursday interview. Both Microsoft and Yahoo have confirmed their intention to join the alliance. Amazon declined to comment because the group hasn't been formally announced yet. The Open Book Alliance also will include an assortment of nonprofit groups.

Among other things, the alliance will try to persuade the U.S. Justice Department that Google's broad settlement with authors and publishers could undermine competition in the digital book market just as more consumers are gravitating toward electronic readers like Amazon.com's Kindle.

In a bit of irony, the alliance is working closely with Gary Reback, a Silicon Valley lawyer who helped convince the Justice Department to file an antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft that tormented the software maker during the late 1990s. Reback didn't respond to a message left late Thursday.

The Justice Department already is assessing the possible fallout from Google's book settlement, which is scheduled to be reviewed by U.S. District Judge Denny Chin in an Oct. 7 court hearing in New York.

Microsoft, Yahoo and Amazon all have financial reasons for objecting to the class-action lawsuit settlement that Google reached with authors and publishers 10 months ago. Amazon may have the most at stake, given that it's a major book seller and is mining the Kindle for even more sales.

Google plans to offer free access to some books through its search engine and sell others as part of a registry that will share revenue with authors and publishers if the class-action settlement is approved.

Opponents of the deal believe it will give Google too much pricing power, and have raised concerns about the company's ability to stockpile more personal data about the users of its search engines by tracking what they're reading.

"We see many disadvantages in this settlement," the Internet Archive's Brantley said.

Others see tremendous benefits. A wide cross-section of libraries, colleges and authors have endorsed Google's book settlement.

Mountain View-based Google argues that the settlement will be a boon for consumers, who will have easier access to potentially valuable information now gathering dust in remote library shelves. And, Google says, authors and publishers will be able to make more money from out-of-print books.

"The Google Books settlement is injecting more competition into the digital books space, so it's understandable why our competitors might fight hard to prevent more competition," Google spokesman Gabriel Stricker said. "That said, it's ironic that some of these complaints are coming from a company that abandoned its book digitization effort because it lacked 'commercial intent'."

Stricker was taking a stab at Microsoft, which abandoned its efforts to make digital book copies to focus on more profitable online opportunities.

Microsoft and Yahoo could be hurt if Google's expanded index of digital books propels even more traffic to its search engine. If that were to happen, Google might process even more search requests than it already does, allowing the company to show more of the text ads alongside search results that generate most of its revenue.

Hoping to siphon advertising away from Google, Microsoft and Yahoo last month announced a planned partnership in search. The proposal, which still must be approved by the Justice Department, calls for Microsoft to run the search engine on Yahoo's web site in return for 12 percent of the revenue generated by accompanying ad sales. Apple denies 'rejecting' Google Voice for iPhone

SEATTLE - Apple Inc. told federal regulators Friday that it blocked the Google Voice program from running on the iPhone because it alters important functions on the device — yet Apple denied that it has rejected Google's application outright.

"Contrary to published reports, Apple has not rejected the Google Voice application, and continues to study it," Apple said in a letter to the Federal Communications Commission.

The FCC is looking into Apple's block on the Google Voice app as part of a bigger examination of the consumer implications of practices in the wireless industry. It sent questions to Apple, Google and AT&T Inc., the only wireless carrier to offer the iPhone in the U.S.

AT&T and Google also responded with letters to regulators Friday. AT&T said Apple did not consult with the company before turning Google's program down. Google kept confidential the parts of its letter describing Apple's reasons for rejecting Google Voice.

Google Voice gives people an additional phone number that's not tied to any one phone line. People can program the service to direct incoming calls first to a cell phone, then a work number and finally a home number, for example. Users can set up voicemail and have Google Voice e-mail transcripts of their messages. It can also be used to send text messages and place calls — even international ones — at low rates paid to Google, not the carriers. Those calls do burn regular cell phone plan minutes, but the idea has still prompted widespread speculation that Apple and AT&T saw a Google Voice app for the iPhone as a potential competitor to their monthly mobile plans.

Apple said it rejected the program because it replaces the iPhone's own interface for making calls and sending text messages with a Google version. The company said it blocked three other developers' phone programs for the same reasons.

Apple said it also was concerned that the app would send the contents of people's iPhone contact lists to Google's servers.

"We have yet to obtain any assurances from Google that this data will only be used in appropriate ways," Apple said. "These factors present several new issues and questions to us that we are still pondering at this time."

The Google Voice snafu comes as competition between onetime allies Apple and Google is heating up. Google has its own cell phone operating software, called Android, and it recently announced plans for a computer operating system that could challenge Apple and its Macs. Eric Schmidt, Google's CEO, resigned from Apple's board in early August, after regulators from the Federal Trade Commission began questioning whether his dual role would make it easier for the two to collude in ways that would diminish competition.

In its response, AT&T told federal regulators Friday that it's not privy to Apple's iPhone application vetting process and played no part in blocking Google Voice. AT&T said the two companies have discussed a handful of programs but not Google's.

Apple's iPhone apps store on iTunes set off a wave of similar digital shops from competitors including Microsoft Corp. and BlackBerry maker Research in Motion Ltd. Outside software developers sign up to get the programming tools necessary for building the apps, then submit them for review and sale on a central site.

Apple has been quiet about the details of its vetting system, which has been criticized as a black box by developers whose apps have been rejected. Some say they submitted apps and waited months, only to be rejected without much of a reason why.

The backlash has grown as some programs have slipped onto the app store that have raised eyebrows — including one game that mimicked a wailing baby and required users to shake the iPhone to extinguish the cries.

In its letter to the FCC, Apple disclosed some aspects of the review process. The company said it gets about 8,500 app submissions a week, some brand new and some updates to existing programs. Apple said more than 40 people work full-time to review the apps, and that at least two look at each one. The team reviews 95 percent of them within two weeks, and about 20 percent are not approved on the first try.

Apple said most of the rejections are due to glitches in the application itself, but that it also rejects programs that "degrade the core experience of the iPhone."

Google told the FCC that iPhone owners can use a Web browser version of Google Voice, but its features are limited. Google's response was redacted to cloak Apple's explanation for the rejection, and Google had no immediate comment on Apple's claim that it is still considering the program.

Apple and AT&T's letters also laid out their agreements regarding Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, programs for the iPhone. Such services let people make calls using Wi-Fi or the cell phone data network instead of using up calling minutes.

AT&T said that under their agreement, Apple would not approve a VoIP app without AT&T's consent. As time went on, AT&T said it told Apple that it does not object to VoIP programs that use Wi-Fi. Apple has approved VoIP applications from eBay Inc.'s Skype, among others, that work over Wi-Fi. (Choi)
