(Choi)

Is Your Windows 7 Install Illegal?

Microsoft issued a friendly reminder in a blog post earlier this week that if you installed Windows 7 on a blank hard drive using an upgrade disc, your Windows installation is illegal. Well, maybe... but I'll get to that in a second.

Redmond's post was a response to a host of blogs and other Web sites that explain how you can perform a clean install of the new OS on any hard drive using the Windows 7 upgrade disc instead of purchasing a full version of the new operating system. That's a tricky move since it will save you at least eighty bucks, but Microsoft says it's a no-no.

How to Be a Pirate Customer

When you use a piece of software on your computer you are required to abide by its end-user license agreement (EULA). You know what the EULA is don't you? It's that big chunk of text you see above the "I Accept" button you see when you're installing new software.

Anyway, part of Microsoft's EULA for upgrade discs says that you must own a full version of a previous version of Windows if you want to use the Windows 7 upgrade disc. So, if you do a fresh install of Windows 7 using the upgrade disc, and you don't own a previous version of Windows, congratulations: you're a pirate customer.

Who doesn't have a copy of Windows?

But do you really need to hack Windows 7? If you've owned a computer in the last 8 years, then chances are you've got a copy of Windows XP or Vista lying around somewhere. Not to mention that computers typically come with the OS pre-installed, so how did you end up with a blank hard drive in the first place?

But let's say you built your own computer, picked up a Linux-based system on the cheap or your first attempt at a Windows 7 upgrade failed and your hard drive is now blank. You still may not be eligible to use the upgrade disc.

Imagine, for example, you've got a two-year old Sony Vaio that came with Windows Vista preinstalled, but you just picked up a brand new laptop running Ubuntu. If your plan is to use your old Vista discs from Sony as a way to upgrade your laptop to Windows 7 on the Linux system, you're on your way to piracy. Not to mention the fact that most manufacturers tweak the included Windows discs to work only with the computer brand they were intended for.

The funny thing is, as I understand it, you can't just own a previous copy of Windows. You also have to have that older copy of Windows installed on the computer you're upgrading to Windows 7. So if you wiped your hard drive by accident while trying to upgrade to Windows 7, technically you have to install XP or Vista first, before upgrading. It's so easy to end up a pirate isn't it?

Piracy or not, I'd be surprised if the upgrade disc hack becomes a particularly widespread problem. It's just so much simpler--not to mention more common--to pick up a computer with Windows already installed on it. (Choi)

Migrate to Windows 7 Slowly, Part 4: Installing Your Apps

Now that you've got Windows 7 up and running on your newly partitioned, dual-boot PC, it's time for the next big step in any OS migration: reinstalling your software.

I've always hated this part, as it involves digging out CDs, downloading apps from lots of different sites, and then manually installing everything. Takes forever.

Thankfully, I've found salvation in the form of Ninite, a new service that automatically downloads and installs popular software.

All you do is scroll through Ninite's list of 70-odd apps, check-marking the ones you want. The service offers the most current versions of nearly every popular mainstream program, including Firefox, Skype, OpenOffice, iTunes, Picasa, Steam, and Revo Uninstaller.

Once you've made your picks, click Get Installer to download a small executable file. When you're ready, run that file and sit back while Ninite goes to work.

How long does it take? That depends on how many programs you've selected. I chose a baker's dozen (including the trial version of Office 2007 Standard, which I already own--now I just have to type in the security key), and I'd swear Ninite was done in all of 10 minutes.

I'll bet the service saved me a couple hours of manual labor. It worked flawlessly, and it installed 90 percent of the programs I use regularly. Awesome. Just awesome. And did I mention Ninite is free?

Burn CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray with Freebie Astroburn Lite

So you've got a bunch of files on your hard disk, and you want to burn them to a CD. You can stick in a blank CD and trust to Window's built-in file burning utility to do it, or you can get a specific program to help you. One such is Astroburn Lite, the freeware version of Astroburn.

Astroburn Lite is... light. While some programs present a simple front end and then reveal depth as you drill through option and setting dialogs, Astroburn Lite is pretty much "What You See Is What You Get." The only "Options" are the language (and there's a huge list) and the visual skin, and your only real choice of operations is "Burn files" or "Burn a .iso image".

Using Astroburn Lite is simple. You can either select files manually (you can Ctrl-click in the dialog box to select multiple files and folders in one go) or you can drag-and-drop files and folders into the window. You can also rearrange and rename what you've dragged, so your burned disk does not have to have the same structure as your source data. Once you're happy with the layout, you simply hit "Start Burn," and it's off! It can burn any file type on your hard drive to writeable CDs, DVD, or Blu-Ray disks.

It's a good thing Astroburn Lite is so simple, because the "Help" function takes you to a Web site which contains the help for the full Astroburn program, which has a somewhat different interface. The help page is also heavily bedecked with advertising, though fortunately not to the point where it's impossible to read the actual help.

That's pretty much it. If your burning needs are either infrequent, or simply very straightforward, Astroburn Lite will do the job with simplicity. It also burns to Blu-Ray, a feature lacking in many other free programs, such as DeepBurner Free.

Note: Astroburn Lite's installer will ask if you want to install their browser toolbar, change your default search engine, or change your home page. These are all selected by default; odds are good you will want to deselect them. (Choi)

Five Things You Should Know About Windows 7 Security

Microsoft says Windows 7 is the most secure version of the Windows operating system ever developed. Big deal, right? I am pretty sure that Microsoft has made that claim for every new version of Microsoft Windows in the past 15 years, and that it is a valid claim.

What else would you expect? Is Microsoft going to come out with a new operating system and make it less secure than its predecessor? I think not. Still, while the marketing around Windows 7 security may be part hyperbole, there are actually a number of significant security improvements to be aware of, especially for Windows XP users making (or considering) the transition to Windows 7. Many of these security updates existed in Windows Vista as well, so Vista users should already be familiar with them.

1. Protecting the Core

The kernel is the heart of the operating system, which also makes it a prime target for malware and other attacks. Basically, if an attacker can access or manipulate the operating system kernel they can execute malicious code at a level that is undetectable by other applications or even by the operating system itself. Microsoft developed kernel-mode protection to protect the kernel and ensure there is no unauthorized access.

In addition to protecting the kernel, Microsoft has made some other fundamental improvements since Windows XP to protect the operating system. Many attacks rely on the attacker being able to know where a specific function or command resides within memory, or the ability to perform attacks on files that are supposed to contain only data.

Address Space Layer Randomization (ASLR) keeps attackers guessing about where to attack by randomizing the memory locations of key operating system functions. Microsoft also developed Data Execution Prevention (DEP) to prevent files that are supposed to contain data or that are stored in an area reserved for data from executing code of any type.

2. Safer Web Browsing

Windows 7 comes with the latest and greatest version of Internet Explorer, IE8. You can download and use IE8 with other versions of Windows, so its not specific to Windows 7, but it does contain some security enhancements worth nothing.

First, InPrivate Browsing provides the ability to surf the Web...in private as the name implies. When you launch an InPrivate Browsing window Internet Explorer does not save any information related to your Web surfing. That means that there is no cache containing information you typed, and no history of the sites you visited. This is especially useful if you are using IE8 on a shared or public computer, like at a library.

The other IE8 security improvement is Protected Mode. Protected Mode relies on security components in Windows 7 to ensure that malicious or unauthorized code is not allowed to run within the browser. Protected Mode prevents things like drive-by downloads that install malicious software on your system just by visiting a compromised web site.

3. Protection We Love to Hate

User Account Control (UAC) is the poster child for everything we love to hate about Windows Vista. With Windows 7, UAC is still there, but Microsoft has added a slider that enables you to control the level of protection--and therefore the amount of pop-ups asking for permission to access or execute files--UAC provides.

The pop-ups are just a small, but visible, aspect of what UAC does. Many users simply disabled UAC altogether in Windows Vista, but that also turns off Protected Mode IE and some other operating system protection. The slider in Windows 7 is set to the same protection as Windows Vista by default, but you can customize the setting in the Control Panel.

4. Security Tools and Apps

Because of the kernel-mode protection and the changes Microsoft made regarding how, or if, applications are allowed to interact with the core functionality of the operating system, older antivirus and other security software is not compatible with Windows 7.

Vendors like McAfee, Symantec, Trend Micro, and others offer Windows7 compatible versions of their security software products, but Microsoft also provides free security tools to protect you if you don't want to invest the additional money.

The Windows Firewall and Windows Defender antispyware tools are included with the base installation of Windows 7. You can also download and install Microsoft Security Essentials, a free antivirus product released recently by Microsoft.

5. Monitor the Action Center

The Security Center that Windows XP users are familiar with has been replaced by the Windows Action Center. The Action Center is a more comprehensive console for monitoring the Windows 7 system, including security.

The security section of the Action Center provides at-a-glance status regarding the security of your Windows 7 system. It includes information about firewall, spyware, and virus protection, as well as the state of Windows Updates, Internet security settings, and UAC.

There are plenty of good reasons to make the switch to Windows 7. If you are still running Windows XP, security is arguably the best reason to embrace the new operating system. It may or may not be the greatest operating system ever, but it is definitely the most secure Windows operating system ever. (Choi)

2. Masuklah ke subkey berikut: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Office/14.0/Outlook/Preferences.
4. Klik kanan tempat kosong pada jendela sebelah kanan dari Registry Editor, pilih [New] > [DWORD (32 bit) value].
5. Berikan nama “MinToTray”.
6. Klik dua kali “MinToTray”, dan gantilah nilai 0 menjadi 1. Klik [OK].
7. Tutuplah Registry Editor. (Choi)

Canonical Matures Linux-based Netbook OS

Canonical on Thursday updated its Linux distribution for netbooks, simplifying the interface and adding new programs that the company says will make it easier for users to access and use Web content.

The Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook Remix is designed to run basic Web and office applications typically used on netbooks. Netbooks are cheap and lightweight laptops characterized by limited computing resources and small s\creen sizes.

The OS, codenamed Karmic Koala, centralizes applications and bookmarks under a single interface to quickly access programs and Web sites. The new version has a "newer, simpler, more beautiful interface" and is easy to install on the popular netbook models, Canonical said in a statement.

The simple interface includes a left frame that lists program categories, which include favorites, Internet, office, games, and sound and video. Clicking on a category brings up a list of related programs in a window on the right. The Netbook Remix OS differs from standard Ubuntu Linux distributions for desktops and servers, which have powerful interfaces that gives users more flexibility in using the OS.

The OS is an upgrade from Canonical's first netbook OS version, Ubuntu Linux 9.04 Netbook Remix, which was released in April. The OS also updates software tools like Firefox Web browser and tools for voice, video and text communication.

After the release of the original Netbook Remix, Canonical said it would focus on improving battery life and boot times in the OS. The company wasn't available to comment on those topics.

Canonical for the first time is also offering its online storage and file-sharing service called Ubuntu One by default in the OS. Users can back up, share or sync data with other One users through the Ubuntu One Web site. The service gives 2GB of online storage free, with an additional 50GB costing US$10 a month.

Netbooks became a hit after their original release in 2007 for their low prices and portability. A number of companies are designing operating systems for the devices, including Intel, Google and Microsoft. Microsoft recently released a version of the Windows 7 OS for netbooks, while Google is developing the netbook-specific Chrome OS, which is based on Linux and is due to appear in netbooks next year. Intel is a big driver behind the development of Moblin, another Linux-based OS designed for portable devices.

Canonical also released final versions of Karmic Koala for desktops and servers on Thursday. Built on the latest Linux 2.6.31.1 kernel, Ubuntu 9.10 offers faster boot times, an improved user interface and programming tools for easier software development, according to the company. The OS by default has shifted to a new filesystem that supports more data storage.

Karmic Koala also includes an updated "Ubuntu Software Center" from which users can easily add or remove programs. In addition to an improved interface, the repository offers more tools to find related program for systems.

Canonical is offering versions of the OS with a variety of desktop environments, including Gnome, KDE and XFCE. These environments, built on top of the Linux kernel, have unique graphical user interfaces and integrated software. (Choi)

Facebook gets $711 million damages in anti-spam case

(Reuters) - Social networking website Facebook was awarded $711.2 million in damages relating to an anti-spam case against Internet marketer Sanford Wallace, court documents show.

Wallace did not oppose the motion or appear at the hearing on September 18, 2009, according to a filing on Thursday in a San Jose, California federal court.

The site filed an anti-spamming case against Wallace in February for accessing people's Facebook accounts without their permission and sending phony mail and posts to the individuals' public message wall, the company said in a blog post.

"While we don't expect to receive the vast majority of the award, we hope that this will act as a continued deterrent," Facebook said in a blog post.

Wallace did not immediately respond to a Reuters email seeking comment. His email address was obtained from the court documents.

The case is In re Facebook Inc. vs. Sanford Wallace, et al, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, No. C 09-798 JF.

Google Maps Navigation: Free and Easy

An impressive feature of Google's new Android 2.0 mobile device operating system is Google Maps Navigation, a turn-by-turn navigation application that's not only free to use, but is fairly easy to learn as well.

The application is included with Motorola's new Droid handset for Verizon Wireless, introduced earlier this week as the first Android 2.0 device on the market.

Google Maps Nav's Extras

While driving directions via Google Maps has been available on many mobile devices for years, including Apple's iPhone and iPod devices, Google Maps Navigation raises the ante by adding spoken turn-by-turn direction, something available only with extra-cost additions to the iPhone. Google Maps Navigation makes good use of the almost bottomless text and image resources of Google's search database and takes advantage of user input to make changes to its maps as necessary.

Turn-by-turn navigation solutions for the iPhone include products live CoPilot Live for iPhone from ALK Technologies ($35) and TomTom Interna tional BV's TomTom app for the iPhone ($100). Both products include maps of the U.S. and Canada that are stored on the phone. Maps of other countries and regions are available, but at extra cost. Both offer customizable voices and detailed 2D and 3D maps with thousands of points of interest, access to weather, and traffic data; and provide the iPhone with clear information with large fonts for easy reading.

Instead of generic maps, however, Google Maps Navigation can lead you to your destination using real overhead and street-level photos. You can allow the application to overlay your route over a satellite view -- a feature not available in most standalone GPS devices.

As you get close you your destination, the navigation screen switches to Google's Street View, an interactive, street-level photograph complete with arrows. This view can be reassuring in cases where, for example, you're looking for a specific building number but can't see the sign from your car.

Testing the Maps

When tested with a the location of a Rite Aid drugstore in New York City, the navigation ended accurately with a Street View of White Plains R oad beneath the elevated tracks of the No. 2 subway line in the Bronx, which has a stop just above the store.

Of course Google doesn't have Street View images for all locations. In these cases, the best available maps, overhead or otherwise, are used.

Once the Droid is inserted into its optional car window mount, it automatically switches to "Car Home" mode, which provides quick access to the features of Google Maps Navigation. The main menu includes five large icons labeled View Map, Navigation, Voice Search, Contacts, and Search; and a smaller Home icon that gets you back to the phone's home page.

In practice the voice search worked well, properly understanding the names of streets and landmarks. If the application isn't sure of which location you mean, it offers a list of choices. Aside from giving it addresses, you can say the name of a store ("Walgreens" or "Rite Aid," for example) or a type of business ("Chinese food," "gas station," "copy shop," etc.) and the application will find a handful of locations and let you choose from a list. It had a little trouble with "CVS," however, not understanding that it was the name of a store and not just three letters.

The top of the Google Maps Navigation screen glows green, yellow or red to give you a hint of what traffic is like ahead of you. The directions barked out by the female voice was distinct and understandable on the Droid and included warnings like "GPS signal has been lost."

The user experience is about the same as with a standalone GPS device except for the fact that the Droid (like the iPhone) has its own Internet connection, as opposed to a GPS device which would need a Bluetooth connection to another device to get on the Internet.

Droid's Friend

The Droid's powerful 550MHz processor and hardware-accelerated graphics allows for smooth scrolling of the navigation maps as long as there's a good 3G data connection. While the iPhone's 480-by-320-pixel display is more than adequate for maps, the Droid's ultra-sharp 480-by-854-pixel screen clearly gives it an advantage with photographs.

Of course the key advantage of Google Maps Navigation over the iPhone solutions is that it's free. No subscription is needed and since all of the mapping data is on the Web, there are no files that need to be updated on the phone.

Google Maps Navigation is clearly a work in progress, however. The first screen you see when you access it on the Droid is a terse reminder of how new the product is: "Google Maps Navigation is in beta. Use caution. Do not manipulate this application while driving. Traffic data is not real-time, and directions may be wrong, dangerous, prohibited, or involve ferries. Keep your eyes on the road!" Enough said.

Web marketer ordered to pay Facebook $711M damages

LOS ANGELES - Facebook said Thursday a California court has awarded the social networking Web site $711 million in damages in an anti-spam case against Internet marketer Sanford Wallace.

Facebook sued Wallace for accessing users' accounts without their permission and sending phony posts and messages. The company said on its blog that in addition to the damage award, the San Jose, Calif., court referred Wallace to the U.S. Attorney's office for prosecution for criminal contempt of court — meaning he could face jail time.

Wallace earned the monikers "Spam King" and "Spamford" as head of a company that sent as many as 30 million junk e-mails a day in the 1990s.

In May 2008, the online hangout MySpace won a $230 million judgment over junk messages sent to its members when a federal judge in Los Angeles ruled against Wallace and his partner, Walter Rines, in another case brought under the federal anti-spam law known as CAN-SPAM. In 2006, Wallace was fined $4 million after the Federal Trade Commission accused him of running an operation that infected computers with software that caused flurries of pop-up ads, known as "spyware."

"While we don't expect to receive the vast majority of the award, we hope that this will act as a continued deterrent against these criminals," said Sam O'Rourke, associate general counsel for Facebook, in a blog posting Thursday. "This is another important victory in our fight against spam."

There was no phone number listed for Wallace in Las Vegas, where he is believed to be living, according to the ruling.

The company said the judgment marks the second-largest anti-spam award ever. In November 2008, Facebook won an $873 million judgment against Adam Guerbuez and his business, Atlantis Blue Capital, who bombarded users with sexually explicit spam messages. (Choi)

Raja Spam 'Hadiahi' Facebook Rp 7 Triliun

District Court of the Northern District of California menyatakan Wallace bersalah melakukan marketing via e-mail dengan cara yang tidak benar.

Selamat ulang tahun, internet! (Choi)

Washington - Serangan masif botnet dilaporkan menerjang sekitar 750.000 user Facebook.

(Choi)

(Choi)
