Akibatnya penjualan hardware mengalami peningkatan hingga dua digit berkat Windows 7.

"Saya pikir itu cukup jelas ketika Anda melihat penjualan hardware, di mana kita telah melihat sebuah pertumbuhan hampir 20 persen setiap tahunnya. Dan berkat Windows 7 penjualan perangkat keras semakin cepat," klaim Ballmer. (Choi)

Google Releases Core Development Tools as Open Source

Google has decided to release as open source several of its key application development tools, hoping that they will prove useful for external programmers to build faster Web applications.

Google has used the tools in some of its most popular Web applications, including Gmail, Google Docs and Google Maps, said Amit Agarwal, a Google product manager.

"By enabling and allowing developers to use the very same tools that Google uses, we hope that they can not only build rich applications but also make the Web really, really fast. That's our primary motive in getting these tools outside to the global community," he said.

The tools include Closure Compiler, which streamlines, optimizes and consolidates Javascript code to make it run faster and more efficiently, increasing the chances that the application will perform well even for users with slow connections, the company announced Thursday.

Google is also releasing Closure Library, a Javascript library that contains a set of standard application services and components that run across different browsers.

"It has served as the standard Javascript library for pretty much any large, public Web application that Google is serving today," Agarwal said. "It's very broad and comprehensive, well-tested, and very modular."

Google is also making available Closure Templates, designed to automate the dynamic creation of HTML. These templates can be used within Javascript in client machines or in Java on servers. (Choi)

Postini Technology to Spread Across Google Apps

The Postini technology that lets Google Apps Premier administrators control their e-mail environments by establishing and enforcing usage policies, rules and parameters will be extended to the other applications of the suite.

That way, Apps Premier administrators will gain tighter control over how employees use not only Gmail but also the other suite components, like the word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications.

When completed, this extension of the Postini security and management capabilities could go a long way toward calming concerns from CIOs and IT managers about using Web-hosted software like Google Apps.

This could in turn boost Google's attempts to lure large organizations to adopt Apps Premier, which, as the suite's most sophisticated version, contains an increasing number of tools and services that these companies require. Apps Premier is the only fee-based edition of the suite, priced at US$50 per user per year.

"Google and Postini are integrated today in that every Apps [Premier] customer gets the Postini [policy and supervisory] services layer for managing e-mail in Gmail," said Scott Petry, a Postini founder and product management director in Google's Enterprise division. "We're actively working on taking that same Postini capability and re-manifesting it across all the Google Apps."

Today, for example, Postini lets Apps administrators set a policy preventing end-users from e-mailing a spreadsheet with financial information during the company's quiet period before an earnings announcement.

"We want to extend that to say 'no one can collaboratively share a document that includes financial information outside the domain,'" said Petry. There is no specific timetable for when this work will be completed.

"We have a real opportunity to take [our Apps] content awareness and our ability to process large amounts of content very quickly and map that to a policy framework to create a supervisory content control layer for corporations to determine how information is being shared across those applications," he added.

Google envisions this as being attractive not only to companies in highly regulated industries, but to any organization that wants to exercise more control over how their end-users share and collaborate on hosted documents.

"Every company running any sort of information system connected to the Internet knows it has information that's risky, proprietary. They have policies their employees need to abide by, but there are no mainstream tools that allow them to manage it," Petry said.

The idea isn't for administrators to lock down Apps in such a way that the suite becomes unusable, but rather to give them tools that can alert them and end-users about potential policy violations, many of which occur accidentally and not always maliciously, he said.

The ultimate goal is to increase organizations' comfort level with the cloud computing model for enterprise software and consequently with products like Google Apps.

"IT administrators are going to feel like they're losing control when they move their services up to the cloud because they can't see boxes in the server racks with blinking lights," Petry said.

"The onus is on us to give them more software-based controls over that virtualized hardware instance, so that they feel they're getting better capabilities and more leverage, rather than just arbitrarily losing control," he added.

As part of this project, Google is fusing the now-separate Postini and Apps administrative consoles, so that administrators can provision services and define policies from a single place, he said.

Postini, founded in 1999, was acquired by Google in 2007, and its products and technology have been progressively integrated with various of Google's services and infrastructure. (Choi)

Windows 7 debut a hit

SAN FRANCISCO (AFP) – Microsoft's new-generation Windows 7 operating system hit the ground running, with US sales in its opening days blasting past those of its Vista predecessor, according to NPD Group.

Sales of Windows 7 in the days following its October 22 release were 234 percent higher than those posted by Vista when it was released into the market, the market research firm reported on Thursday.

"Microsoft's program of early low-cost pre-sales, high visibility marketing, and aggressive deals helped make the Windows 7 software launch successful," said NPD vice president of analysis Stephen Baker.

"In a slow environment for packaged software Windows 7 brought a large number of customers into the software aisles," he said.

Revenue from Windows 7 sales during its initial days in the market only surpassed Vista by 83 percent due to price discounts and a lack of promotion for an Ultimate version of the new operating system, according to NPD.

The Windows 7 launch also gave a bump to personal computer (PC) sales, which nearly doubled from the previous week and were 49 percent higher than the same period a year earlier, but Vista's launch gave PC sales a bigger boost, NPD said.

"A combination of factors impacted Windows 7 PC sales at the outset, but the trajectory of overall PC sales is very strong leading into the holiday season," said Baker.

Microsoft's much-heralded Windows 7 went on sale around the world in October as the US software giant rebooted after the disappointment of its previous generation operating system Vista.

Windows 7 made its global debut to generally good reviews with most technology analysts and users who tested a demo version praising it as a significant improvement on the much-maligned Vista.

Analyst Rob Enderle of Silicon Valley's Enderle Group said the Windows 7 launch was a "big deal for Microsoft."

"Windows Vista was a train wreck," he said.

While computer users may not give much thought to the operating systems that serve as the brains of their machines, they are at the heart of Microsoft's global software empire that runs more than 90 percent of the world's computers.

Microsoft apparently learned a lesson from Vista and worked closely with computer makers, users and software developers while crafting Windows 7.

More than eight million people dabbled with Windows 7 in a beta test phase.

Among the new features in Windows 7 is a redesigned taskbar for launching programs and switching windows, enhanced ability to share files with other PCs, improved photo and video editing software and the ability to stream digital music or video to other devices. (Choi)

Droid joins 'Google phone' army in smart phone war

SAN FRANCISCO - A Motorola Droid smart phone goes on sale Friday, joining the growing ranks of smart phones on the open-source operating system backed by Google.

With Droid, which will work on the Verizon telecom network, Motorola is taking on mobile devide powerhouses such as Apple, Nokia and Research in Motion (RIM).

"People are gravitating to Android phones because they are different and trendy. Droid may be the new 'in' phone," said analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group in Silicon Valley.

Taiwan-based HTC brought the first Android phone to market late last year.

Google chief executive Eric Schmidt recently proclaimed that the smart phone market was on the cusp of an "explosion" of Android devices.

Market tracking firm Gartner agrees, predicting that there will be at least 40 models of Android phones within a year, and that they will be the second place mobile platform by the end of 2012.

Reports surfaced on Thursday that Verizon is poised to add an HTC Android phone to its stable.

"In a few years Android will be the second most popular smart phone running neck-and-neck with Apple," Gartner analyst Van Baker told AFP on Thursday.

Apple iPhones have become coveted devices since they were introduced in early 2007.

Verizon and Motorola have managed to create a marketplace buzz with mysterious video featuring fighter jets releasing metal pods that slam like meteorites into forest, sea, and prairie.

The pods crack open to give glimpses of Droid devices, then end with a cowboy uttering "What in the world is that?" and a message that proclaims Friday the "drop date."

Verizon poked at Apple with 'iDon't' advertising highlighting things iPhones lacks, and US newspapers on Thursday sported full-page ads heralding the Droid's arrival.

Droid devices are likely to pose more of a threat to Blackberry smart phones made by Canada-based RIM than they are to iPhones, according to analysts.

"It's not an iPhone killer," Gartner vice president of mobile computing Ken Dulaney said of Droid.

"This is really about changing the mix at Verizon. It will be some attack on RIM."

Blackberry devices dominate the Verizon network, and the Droid offering will give subscribers a tempting alternative to RIM devices.

Meanwhile, iPhones in the United States are serviced exclusively by telecom colossus AT&T, which has no Android smart phones on its network.

"Droid is not going to draw anyone away from AT&T to Verizon," Dulaney said. "It will keep people at Verizon from going to AT&T and keep some people from going to Blackberry."

US smart phone users get discounted prices on handsets in exchange for signing multi-year service contracts with carriers.

Breaking contracts typically results in hefty fees, a fact likely to discourage people from switching to Verizon just to have Droid phones, according to analysts.

"RIM is likely to get hurt in Verizon and lose a lot of business," Baker said, suggesting subscribers will be lured to Droid handsets while not having to change carriers.

Droid is built with a slide-out keyboards, which appeal to smart phone users prone to typing as is the case with Blackberry devotees, said Dulaney.

RIM is rising to the challenge with the release later this month of a Bold 9700 smart phone.

"The Bold 9700 is outstanding," Dulaney said. "For those that like keyboards it is top-of-the-class."

Blackberry devices appeal to a "different class of user" that likes typing and demands a secure network for taking care of business or other sensitive matters, according to the analyst.

"(US President Barack) Obama is not going to be using iPhone," Dulaney said. "There isn't security in iPhone and Android is a little weaker with support."

Microsoft may end up a victim of Android's success, with the Google software supplanting the Redmond, Washington technology giant's mobile operating system as an industry standard. (Choi)

EU agrees on new Internet user rights

BRUSSELS – EU lawmakers and governments agreed on new rights for Internet users Thursday, aiming to protect them from arbitrary crackdowns on those who illegally download music and movies on the Internet.

EU Telecoms Commissioner Viviane Reding said a deal was reached after EU governments agreed to EU parliament demands to balance measures against illegal downloaders with a broader set of rights for telecom users.

The reforms were two years in the making. They also include new privacy controls, consumer rights and increased competition for Internet and phone services — key improvements that have been overshadowed by the fight over digital user rights.

Thursday's proposal also includes other reforms to overhaul Europe's telecoms market.

They include setting up a new EU-wide telecoms authority charged with ensuring fair competition, bolstering consumers' rights to switch mobile or landline telephone operators within one working day, and expanding digital networks to provide faster broadband Internet service for users in rural areas.

EU lawmakers had been at odds with governments, notably France, over how to tackle the increase in illegal downloading.

Film and record labels had heavily lobbied the 27-nation bloc, demanding better enforcement of copyright rules to protect profits that are shrinking in the face of online file-sharing, in which people swap music files without paying.

However, in a victory for the EU assembly, governments relented and agreed to include guarantees in the bill protecting users from arbitrary cutoffs of their Internet services.

"This Internet freedom provision is unprecedented ... and (gives) a strong signal that the EU takes fundamental rights very seriously," Reding told reporters. "(It will) substantially enhance consumer rights and consumer choice in Europe's telecoms markets."

The bill still needs the final approval of the European Parliament and EU governments, which is expected later this month.

Under the guarantee, national authorities will only be able to cut off Internet services if they have proof that a user was downloading illegal copies of movies or music files, ensuring that users are presumed innocent.

"Full due process rights will have to apply in any administrative case, except in cases of duly justified urgency, like serious crime, terrorism, child pornography," said Spanish lawmaker Alejo Vidal-Quadras. "This is really a step forward."

European consumers' organization BEUC, warned however that the draft EU bill was too vague on "due process" rights given to users, complaining it does not specifically provide suspected illegal downloaders the right to a judicial hearing.

Christian Engstrom, a lawmaker from Sweden's Pirate Party, said the revised bill was somewhat of a victory for file-sharers, but warned that the EU assembly would have to keep a close eye on member states that want to cut off Internet users for online pirating.

Under pressure from the music and film industries, France had pushed hard for tough measures against illegal downloaders. French President Nicolas Sarkozy had advocated a "three strikes and you're out" rule, under which Internet use would be tracked and users caught downloading would be warned twice before their Internet access would be cut off for a year. Britain is also considering such a move, lawmakers said.

However, the French parliament passed a law in September watering down that plan and efforts to cut off Internet access will be left to a judge. (Choi)

Google providing better view of personal data

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. - Google is offering a new privacy control that will make it easier for people to see some of the information being collected about them.

The "Dashboard" feature unveiled Thursday pulls together all the data that pour into Google's computers whenever Web surfers log in to one of the company' services.

That includes summaries of an individual's e-mail, search requests and viewing habits on Google's video site, YouTube. Before, a user would have to check multiple places for all that.

The snapshot doesn't include any activity that occurs when a person isn't logged into a Google service.

Dashboard represents Google Inc.'s latest step to give its users more control over their personal information and appease privacy watchdogs. (Choi)

Are You Neglecting Your Windows Key?

Today I saw something that made my eyes go wide: A friend reached for the mouse, clicked the Start button, and then went back to the keyboard to type the name of the app he wanted to launch.

I asked him what I considered an obvious question: "Why didn't you just press the Windows key?"

"The what key?" he responded.

Seriously? This isn't common knowledge? Apparently not, because after a quick survey of some friends and family, I discovered that few people ever bother with the Windows key, and some don't even know what it's there for.

(The horror. Time to re-up your PC World subscriptions, people!)

Needless to say, a tap of the Windows key (which on most keyboards is just to the left of the Space Bar) takes you to the Start menu, where--in Vista and 7--you can start typing to dynamically search for apps, files, e-mail, and the like.

A lesser-known use of the Windows key is to launch apps in a flash. And don't forget these three indispensable Windows-key shortcuts.

So stop thinking of that little key as some kind of wayward Microsoft marketing effort and start putting it to good use! (Choi)

Are Heavy Discounts Behind Window 7's Success?

The early sales numbers for Windows 7 are indeed impressive. According to market researcher NPD Group, U.S. sales of Windows 7 boxed software were a whopping 234 percent higher than Vista's first several days of sales. And as my colleague Brennon Slattery pointed out earlier today, a mixture of media hype and mostly upbeat Windows 7 reviews are working in Microsoft's favor.

The news is so good, in fact, that Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer called early Windows 7 sales "fantastic" during a Thursday media event in Tokyo, according to the Wall Street Journal .

The NPD figures, however, also show that Microsoft is deeply discounting Windows 7, particularly the Home Premium Upgrade version targeted at consumers. The average selling price of Home Premium Upgrade is $76--that's nearly 37 percent off the $120 list, as this NPD chart indicates

The business-oriented Windows 7 Pro Upgrade is discounted too, although not as deeply. Its $147 average selling price is 26 percent off the $200 list. The Home Premium Family Pack 3 User Upgrade, which cuts the per-PC upgrade price to $50, isn't discounted at all--no surprise there, as the Family Pack already a relatively good deal.

Recently I wrote that Windows 7 Home Upgrade was overpriced, and that consumers wouldn't pay $120 for an OS upgrade that doesn't offer any whiz-bang new features. That's not a knock against Windows 7, which so far appears to be a worthy successor to Vista. But the enhancements didn't warrant the cost, particularly in light of the Vista public relations disaster.

Microsoft is smart to offer deep discounts right away. The low street price encourages impulse buys--$76 is a lot more palatable than $120--and boosts sales of upgrade versions. Redmond can then trumpet Windows 7 as a huge success--which, to be fair, seems accurate out of the gate.

It'll have to keep selling prices low to keep those sales figures high, however. (Choi)
