'Pelajar, Jauhi Wikipedia Dekati Google-Yahoo'

Tiger Woods Selingkuh, Bos Yahoo Senang

"Tuhan memberkati Tiger," ujarnya di tengah gelaran tahunan Global Media and Communications Conference di New York.

Duet Microsoft-Yahoo 'Bunuh' Google?

Microsoft & Yahoo Satukan Kekuatan Tumbangkan Google

2010, Yahoo Hentikan Aplikasi Mobile 'Go'

Yahoo Go, yang pertama kali dikenalkan pada Consumer Electronics Show 2006, memang terakhir kali diupgrade hingga Yahoo Go 3.0 beta pada Januari 2008.

(Choi)

Selamat Tinggal Yahoo! Go

(Choi)

Yahoo Messenger 10 Akhirnya Datang Juga

rasanya masih seperti versi sebelumnya.

Mim Mikroblogging Yahoo Berbahasa Indonesia

(Choi)

Yahoo Kejar Google dengan Real Time Search

(Choi)

Icahn resigns from Yahoo! board

NEW YORK (AFP) - Billionaire investor Carl Icahn resigned from his position on the Yahoo! board, saying the US Internet giant no longer needed an "activist" director like him.

"I don't believe that it is necessary at this time to have an activist on the board of Yahoo! and currently, my attention is focused on other matters," Icahn, one of the company's largest shareholders, wrote in a resignation letter to the board, a copy of which was provided by his office.

"As a result, I do not presently have the time that is necessary to devote to the business and affairs of Yahoo! required if a board member is to fulfill his fiduciary duties to the shareholders," he added.

A spokeswoman for the investor, Susan Gordon, said in a statement that Icahn "indicated that there are a number of other companies on which he is currently focused."

Icahn -- a financier who has developed a reputation as a corporate raider -- on Monday offered a six-billion-dollar loan to ailing lending giant CIT Group.

In late August Icahn sold 12.7 million shares in Yahoo!, cutting his stake in the company a month after it formed an Internet search partnership with software giant Microsoft.

Last November, following the decision of Yahoo! co-founder Jerry Yang to step down as head of the Internet firm, Icahn increased his stake in Yahoo! to 5.4 percent, up from the 5.0 percent he owned previously.

Icahn and Yang were involved in a very public dispute last year when Yang rejected a 47-billion-dollar takeover bid by Microsoft for the company he founded with a Stanford University classmate in 1995.

Icahn headed a shareholder revolt to oust Yahoo! leaders for bungling the Microsoft deal.

Yahoo! last year avoided an ugly show-down with Icahn, whose campaign to overthrow the board was ended by a truce that assured him three seats.

"Icahn was there to drive the sale to Microsoft," said analyst Rob Enderle of Enderle Group in Silicon Valley.

"Microsoft doesn't really want to buy Yahoo! and Yahoo! isn't interested in being acquired. So, what's he going to do? He probably figures his time is better spent elsewhere."

Icahn's sale of Yahoo! stock came a month after the company agreed to a Web search and advertising partnership with Microsoft.

"Carl has been an important member of the board and has helped us through some significant transitions," Yahoo! said Friday in a release.

"We are all grateful for his active role shaping the future of Yahoo! and wish him well in all of his endeavors."

In his resignation letter he also praised Yahoo!'s new chief executive Carol Bartz, who took over after Yang's departure.

"Carol is doing a great job and I believe the Microsoft transaction will provide great long term benefits, the potential of which many still do not understand."

In 2008, Icahn's net worth was estimated to stand at 14 billion dollars, but this year, following the stock market slump, Forbes magazine recalculated his net worth as nine billion dollars. (Choi)

Yahoo profits rise in 3Q, will revenue follow?

SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc. has pumped up its profits by laying off workers and weeding out unpopular Internet services.

Now Carol Bartz, Yahoo's third chief executive since June 2007, has to figure out how to boost the company's sagging Internet sales — a problem that could become easier to solve if the U.S. economy continues to recover from its worst recession in 70 years.

Yahoo's progress and challenges still facing the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company were both evident in third-quarter results released late Tuesday. While the earnings for the July-September period more than tripled from the previous year, revenue slipped by at least 12 percent for the third straight quarter.

The revenue rut means Yahoo still has a long way to go on its comeback trail.

Investors, though, are betting Yahoo will continue to make strides under the no-nonsense Bartz, who was hired nine months ago to engineer a turnaround. That's something neither Yahoo's two previous CEOs, company co-founder Jerry Yang and former movie studio boss Terry Semel, could pull off.

In a sign of Wall Street's faith in Bartz, Yahoo shares gained 87 cents, or 5.1 percent, to $18.04 in extended trading Tuesday. If the stock mirrors that surge in Wednesday's regular trading, it will mark a new 52-week high for the stock. Yahoo shares remain well below a $33-per-share takeover offer that Microsoft Corp. dangled in May 2008, only to withdraw the bid after Yang asked for more money.

Bartz indicated she believes her plans are starting to pan out.

"We had a solid third quarter that signals our major businesses have stabilized," she said in a prepared statement.

Yahoo earned $186 million, or 13 cents a share, in the July-September quarter, compared with $54 million, or 4 cents a share, at the same time last year. The average estimate among analysts polled by Thomson Reuters was 7 cents per share.

Shedding 2,000 jobs over the past year to reduce Yahoo's payroll to 13,200 employees accounted for some of the improvement. Yahoo also got a one-time lift of $98 million from selling its stake in China's Alibab.com.

Revenue for the period fell 12 percent to $1.58 billion, a scant improvement from the first six months of the year when revenue dropped by 13 percent.

While Yahoo has been trying to regain its footing, Google Inc. has sprinted further ahead of its older rival. Last week, Google posted the highest profit in its 11-year history in the third quarter as its revenue climbed 7 percent.

Google handles about two out of three search requests in the United States while Yahoo processes about one in every five of the queries. The disparity gives Google a big advantage because a huge piece of Internet advertising is tied to search requests.

Advertisers also are more likely to increase their spending on search ads because they are relatively inexpensive and typically only cost money when they are clicked on. And Google tends to show more ads that provoke consumer clicks.

To help close the gap, Yahoo is turning to Microsoft Corp. to power its search engine in the United States. If regulators approve the alliance, Yahoo plans to transfer at least 400 workers to Microsoft and lay off an unspecified number of other employees in an effort to save more than $400 million annually.

Yahoo makes most of its money in display advertising — a niche consisting of online billboards and other more visual messages. Those marketing campaigns tend to require larger, long-term commitments that are unlikely to be made until advertisers see more evidence that the economy is strengthening. (Choi)

Microsoft, Yahoo, Amazon to fight Google book deal

SAN FRANCISCO - The fight against a legal settlement that would give Google Inc. the digital rights to millions of copyrighted books is starting to resemble a heavyweight brawl in the library.

Microsoft Corp., Yahoo Inc. and Amazon.com Inc. are joining a coalition that hopes to rally opposition to Google's digital book ambitions and ultimately persuade a federal judge to block or revise the Internet search leader's plans.

The group, to be called the Open Book Alliance, is being put together by the Internet Archive, a longtime critic of Google's crusade to make digital copies of as many printed books as possible. A growing number of critics already have filed objections to Google's book settlement, but none have the clout that the Open Book Alliance figures to wield with three of the world's best-known technology companies on board.

Peter Brantley, the Internet Archive's director of access, provided some of the details about the alliance's members and objectives in a Thursday interview. Both Microsoft and Yahoo have confirmed their intention to join the alliance. Amazon declined to comment because the group hasn't been formally announced yet. The Open Book Alliance also will include an assortment of nonprofit groups.

Among other things, the alliance will try to persuade the U.S. Justice Department that Google's broad settlement with authors and publishers could undermine competition in the digital book market just as more consumers are gravitating toward electronic readers like Amazon.com's Kindle.

In a bit of irony, the alliance is working closely with Gary Reback, a Silicon Valley lawyer who helped convince the Justice Department to file an antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft that tormented the software maker during the late 1990s. Reback didn't respond to a message left late Thursday.

The Justice Department already is assessing the possible fallout from Google's book settlement, which is scheduled to be reviewed by U.S. District Judge Denny Chin in an Oct. 7 court hearing in New York.

Microsoft, Yahoo and Amazon all have financial reasons for objecting to the class-action lawsuit settlement that Google reached with authors and publishers 10 months ago. Amazon may have the most at stake, given that it's a major book seller and is mining the Kindle for even more sales.

Google plans to offer free access to some books through its search engine and sell others as part of a registry that will share revenue with authors and publishers if the class-action settlement is approved.

Opponents of the deal believe it will give Google too much pricing power, and have raised concerns about the company's ability to stockpile more personal data about the users of its search engines by tracking what they're reading.

"We see many disadvantages in this settlement," the Internet Archive's Brantley said.

Others see tremendous benefits. A wide cross-section of libraries, colleges and authors have endorsed Google's book settlement.

Mountain View-based Google argues that the settlement will be a boon for consumers, who will have easier access to potentially valuable information now gathering dust in remote library shelves. And, Google says, authors and publishers will be able to make more money from out-of-print books.

"The Google Books settlement is injecting more competition into the digital books space, so it's understandable why our competitors might fight hard to prevent more competition," Google spokesman Gabriel Stricker said. "That said, it's ironic that some of these complaints are coming from a company that abandoned its book digitization effort because it lacked 'commercial intent'."

Stricker was taking a stab at Microsoft, which abandoned its efforts to make digital book copies to focus on more profitable online opportunities.

Microsoft and Yahoo could be hurt if Google's expanded index of digital books propels even more traffic to its search engine. If that were to happen, Google might process even more search requests than it already does, allowing the company to show more of the text ads alongside search results that generate most of its revenue.

Hoping to siphon advertising away from Google, Microsoft and Yahoo last month announced a planned partnership in search. The proposal, which still must be approved by the Justice Department, calls for Microsoft to run the search engine on Yahoo's web site in return for 12 percent of the revenue generated by accompanying ad sales. Microsoft sees size as search answer in Yahoo deal

REDMOND - Microsoft is hoping that a long-term partnership with rival Yahoo will give it the size and insight it needs to bring in more traffic, more advertisers and ultimately more revenue.

By handling Yahoo Inc.'s searches along with its own, Microsoft Corp. can learn more quickly what works and what doesn't. A smarter search engine might draw more Internet users, and more advertisers could follow, driving up prices.

Size, though, may wind up being far from the magic bullet that Microsoft is counting on in forging a 10-year partnership to power all Yahoo searches.

Search leader Google Inc. has had a head start in technical development, and Microsoft already has had plenty of search queries to analyze — yet it remains stuck at No. 3. Adding more data might not make a difference.

"They have lots of scale. They have lots of traffic. Even being the third-place player, they have huge amounts of data to understand their own relevancy," said Danny Sullivan, editor of the search news site Searchengineland.com. "I just don't know why they keep putting that argument out."

The deal still needs regulatory review on such issues as whether it will promote or hinder competition and how the two companies will share the personal data collected in searches.

If approved, Microsoft's technology will process Yahoo's searches behind the scenes. The only nod to Microsoft will appear — with credit placed at the bottom of the page — when a user gets results from a Web search.

In exchange, Microsoft will keep 12 percent of the ad revenue those searches generate. That's a better deal for Yahoo than most agreements of this sort, though the terms go up for review halfway through the deal.

Microsoft has yet to turn a profit on its search and advertising business despite having invested billions.

The software maker's stockholders so far have been guardedly positive about the deal, perhaps because it did not require a $9 billion upfront payment to Yahoo, a condition of a similar deal proposed last year. If Microsoft can't use this partnership to improve its search finances, though, they will eventually run out of patience.

Microsoft expects to spend up to $700 million to get the arrangement up and running, something that could take two years to fully deploy worldwide. It may spend up to $200 million within the next 12 months alone.

But the company believes it's worth it.

With the partnership, Microsoft will funnel Yahoo's nearly 3 billion monthly Web searches. Add that to the 1 billion Microsoft gets on its own, and the software maker will quadruple the queries it processes, allowing its search engine to gain even more insight into how to improve the experience.

Every move a search user makes is fed back into the system, so when the next person comes along with a similar problem, the search engine is a little bit smarter about solving it. For example, if five people in a row click on the fifth link on the results page for "Seattle Space Needle," the search engine — a sophisticated computer program — might try moving that link up to the top.

When search results give people what they're looking for right away, they're more likely to come back. It's a case of the sum totaling more than its parts: The deal is about more than simply combining search traffic from the two sites.

More people doing more searching on Microsoft-powered sites should then attract more companies wanting to peddle their products through short text ads next to search results. Some may not have bothered advertising on Microsoft and Yahoo separately, because as separate sites their audiences were too small to make up for the hassle of recreating Google search ad campaigns on a second and even a third system. Those advertisers may be enticed by the convenience and reach of this partnership, or by the idea of having a solid second place to spend their ad dollars to keep Google in check.

A bigger number of ads in the hopper gives Microsoft's technology a better chance of plucking out one that entices someone to click. The more times Microsoft watches someone click an ad — or not — the better its formula becomes for making the right match.

And because search ads are sold auction-style, more advertisers vying for those spots should drive up prices, ultimately helping Microsoft eke out a bit more from every ad it sells.

Right now, Microsoft estimates that Google gets 7 cents in ad revenue for every search, while Yahoo gets 4.3 cents and Microsoft gets 3.9 cents, according to a PowerPoint slide Microsoft mistakenly posted online.

Once Microsoft is handling Yahoo's searches, Microsoft predicts revenue per search for both companies will rise to 5 cents. Subtracting the commission Microsoft will pay Yahoo, Microsoft expects to start making a "decent" return of $400 million.

"The number of searchers is a vital driver of success," said Tim Cadogan, CEO of online advertising company OpenX and a former senior vice president in Yahoo's advertising division. "Being able to get nearly 30 percent catapults Microsoft from a tougher position to a more viable place from which they can build."

And build it must. Google gets about two-thirds of U.S. search queries, according to comScore Inc. Yahoo handled about a fifth of U.S. searches in June, and Microsoft fielded less than half of that. The partnership would bring the two companies' combined share to nearly 30 percent, still less than half of Google's total.

Staying a distant second to Google will leave Microsoft perpetually playing catch-up while Google keeps getting better. In other words, there are almost never enough data.

And that assumes size is all that's holding Microsoft back, a premise that Gartner analyst Andrew Frank described as "an overly simplistic view of Google's accomplishments."

Google had a head start on Microsoft and Yahoo in fine-tuning its search advertising system based on what works and what doesn't, making note of everything from the number of ads on a search results page to their exact size, placement, spacing and color.

When someone does a Web search, Google does more than simply spit out an ad that matches the keyword. Google weighs many factors to figure out how likely a user will click on an ad. An oft-clicked ad on a common search might be shown first, even if it brings in less revenue than a less popular but more lucrative one.

Microsoft has smart computer scientists working full-time on the same puzzle, but Google's lead is formidable, and Microsoft's devotion to search pales compared with cash cows like Office and Windows.

Ultimately, the Redmond, Wash.-based software maker may have to settle for something less tangible.

Google has been making incursions onto Microsoft's home turf, the software that makes computers run and helps people get their work done. By stepping up its game in search, Microsoft may ultimately force Google to focus on its core search engine rather than its fledgling software business, including a recently announced Chrome operating system that could challenge Windows. Yahoo comes full circle with retreat from search

SAN FRANCISCO - Yahoo Inc. invested billions of dollars in its Internet search engine during the past six years before realizing it made more sense to entrust the job to an outsider — hearkening back to a conclusion the company's co-founders reached shortly after they started their Web directory in the mid-1990s.

The latest shift in direction will put rival Microsoft Corp. in control of the search results and the ads that appear alongside search results on Yahoo's highly trafficked Web site, assuming the proposed partnership is approved by antitrust regulators in the United States and Europe.

The 10-year deal announced Wednesday blows up a search expansion undertaken under Yahoo's former chief executive, Terry Semel, who resigned under shareholder pressure two years ago. The repudiation of Semel's strategy returns Yahoo to a philosophy embraced by co-founders Jerry Yang and David Filo in the company's early days.

Within two years of starting what was originally known as "Jerry and David's Guide to the World Wide Web," Yang and Filo concluded Yahoo wouldn't be able to index all the new sites proliferating on the Internet without more automation and sophistication.

Rather than spend its own money on expensive upgrades, Yahoo hired AltaVista to supplement its search engine and then later turned to Inktomi. Those decisions freed up more cash for Yahoo to spend on compelling content and developing other services that established its Web site as the biggest draw on the Internet.

As indexing the Web grew even more complicated in 2000, Yahoo sought the expertise of an ambitious young startup called Google.

In a move that the company later regretted, Yahoo promoted the Google brand next to its search box to show where it got its results. The exposure on one of the Web's most popular pages drove millions of people to Google's search engine, which quickly supplanted Yahoo as the go-to place to find stuff on the Web.

After Google came up with a way to make big money from text ads placed alongside search results, Semel wanted a bigger piece of the action.

Beginning in 2002, Yahoo spent more than $2 billion buying other search engines, including the remnants of AltaVista and Inktomi. Later, Yahoo invested heavily in search improvements that included a much-delayed advertising system called Panama.

Although it helped boost Yahoo's profits early on, the search expansion never panned out the way Semel envisioned. Google widened its lead in search as Yahoo's U.S. share shriveled from about one-third of the market in 2004 to about one-fifth of the market today. To make matters worse, socializing hubs like Facebook and MySpace supplanted Yahoo as the hot spots to hang out on the Web.

"They just lost their way," said technology analyst Rob Enderle. "This (Microsoft deal) will let them rediscover what they once were — a place where a lot of people liked to spend a lot of their time online."

While he was Yahoo's CEO last year, Yang tried to lessen Yahoo's financial commitment to search by forming an advertising partnership with Google. Under that plan — which is narrower than what Yahoo now wants to do with Microsoft — Google would have served up some of the ads that ran alongside search results on Yahoo. U.S. antitrust regulators threatened to sue to block the arrangement, scaring Google off.

Yang didn't seem to want any part of Microsoft. In May 2008, he and the rest of Yahoo's board rebuffed a Microsoft offer to pay Yahoo $1 billion in cash and buy $8 billion worth of stock in return for a search partnership.

Now, Yahoo will get no cash upfront, and instead will get a big share of the ad revenue generated by Microsoft's search engine when it handles queries on Yahoo's site. (Microsoft will also keep running its search engine at its usual locations, such as msn.com, bing.com and on the "toolbars" it lets people download to their Web browsers.)

Carol Bartz, Yahoo's chief executive for the past six months, quickly realized that the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company needed to get back to its roots. Since her arrival, Bartz has been de-emphasizing Yahoo's need to run its own search engine.

"It really hard to tell whether (Bartz) just thinks Yahoo isn't that strong in search or whether she thinks she needs to jettison search to save the company," said Danny Sullivan, editor of the online newsletter SearchEngineLand.

This much is certain: Microsoft has been stalking Yahoo for years because it wants to boost its meager U.S. market share of 8 percent to narrow the gap separating it from Google, which commands a 65 percent share. Because Yahoo handles about 20 percent of search requests, the Microsoft-Yahoo combination would have about 28 percent share, assuming no big shifts in usage between now and when the project is fully running — which could take two years.

"We found a partner willing and excited to put a lot of technology behind search," Bartz said in an interview Wednesday. "So our customers are still going to get the same search experience or better search experience because of the investment that Microsoft is willing to make."

Microsoft is no stranger to the concept of farming out search, having done that itself earlier this decade, when it relied on Yahoo's technology.

Another prominent Web site, AOL, has used Google for search results and advertising for years. Having the extra money to spend on other products and services hasn't proven that effective for AOL, which has been faring so badly for so long that its corporate parent, Time Warner Inc., is cutting the subsidiary loose this year.

Since breaking away from its first partnership with Yahoo, Microsoft has been continually honing its search expertise and even hired away one of Yahoo's top engineers, Qi Lu, to further the cause.

This time, Yahoo won't feature its partner's brand in the prime space located next to its search box. Bing's name instead will only appear at the bottom of the search results page. (Choi)

Microsoft-Yahoo deal to face tough antitrust probe

WASHINGTON - The Internet search partnership between Microsoft and Yahoo faces a tough antitrust review in the U.S. and overseas, with approval likely hinging on whether the marriage would foster more competition with market leader Google.

The deal, announced Wednesday, may have a better shot at success than the proposed pact last year between Yahoo Inc. and Google Inc. That agreement fell apart after the Justice Department threatened to block it, ultimately leading Yahoo to revive talks with Microsoft Corp.

Yahoo's alliance with Microsoft could have an easier path because antitrust regulators are tougher on deals involving the top two companies in an industry, said Evan Stewart, an antitrust lawyer at Zuckerman Spaeder. Google is by far the leading search engine, with two-thirds of the U.S. search market, according to comScore Inc.; Yahoo is well ahead of Microsoft for the next two spots.

Even so, a key lawmaker on antitrust issues said Wednesday that the agreement "warrants our careful scrutiny."

Sen. Herb Kohl, a Wisconsin Democrat, said lawmakers would review the deal "because of the potentially far-reaching consequences for consumers and advertisers and our concern about dampening the innovation we have come to expect from a competitive high-tech industry."

Meanwhile, the Obama administration's antitrust enforcers have promised to subject deals to more rigorous review than the previous administration.

"I'm expecting tough scrutiny in the U.S., and even tougher" in the European Union, said Herbert Hovenkamp, an antitrust law professor at the University of Iowa. He noted that European regulators have historically taken a harder line against Microsoft than their U.S. counterparts in their reviews of the software company's dominance in other products, like Windows and Internet Explorer.

A Justice Department spokeswoman, Gina Talamona, would say only that the department is "aware" of the deal. Peter Kaplan, a spokesman for the Federal Trade Commission, which also enforces antitrust law, declined to comment.

Under the agreement announced Wednesday, Yahoo will use Microsoft's search engine, Bing, on its Web portal, significantly expanding Bing's reach. In return, Yahoo will keep 88 percent of the revenue from search ads for the first half of the 10-year deal.

The deal isn't expected to close until early next year, and Yahoo and Microsoft said in a joint statement that they expect the agreement to be "closely reviewed by the industry and government regulators." They insist their partnership will lead to better choices for consumers and advertisers.

A key issue, according to Hovenkamp, will be whether regulators accept Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer's argument that the deal will create a stronger competitor against Google.

"In the past, that defense hasn't worked all that well," Hovenkamp said, and courts have shot down deals between the second- and third-largest players in other industries.

But Stewart said the deal should pass muster because it will provide "real competition" to Google.

Separately, privacy advocates came out against the agreement.

The Center for Digital Democracy, an online privacy advocate in Washington that opposed the Google-Yahoo partnership last year, called for an examination of the partnership's consumer data collection policies, as well as privacy and online ad business practices.

The U.S. Public Interest Research Group also came out against the deal, as it had the Google-Yahoo partnership.

"The Microsoft-Yahoo deal should serve as a red flag," said Amina Fazlullah, media and telecom legislative counsel for the Washington, D.C.-based group. "When we lose independent search competitors, then we lose the ability to have multiple competitors working to preserve privacy." (Choi)
